Also too, when I was removing it, as I would put pressure on the bolts, I would just sit a propane torch on it for a few seconds and it would move, then repeat. Sounded like a bell getting rung from the prop. Scared the heck out of me the first time! About every 5 min, ding.

No, the boat was from up north Wisconsin, no salt that I'm aware of, I do know this boat has never been apart.('87 2001)
I understand the puller issues that's why I did the socket/bolt method.
On my lunch hour I took it to our fleet maint shop. Put it on the press and gently straightened it back out. Then since the lathe was out of service, I got looking at the ammco brake lathe. What do ya know, the coupler is the size of the shaft on the machine. I chucked it up and trimmed .018 off of the face of the coupler and we're done. And now I know the face is square with the shaft. = )
Thanks for the replies, I love this site!

Jody,
Wow, that coupling must have really been on that shaft tight!! You used the correct method. Has the boat ever see salt water?

Regarding the gear puller, they pull on the OD of the flange so it's easy to bend it.

Bruce,
You press it back off the shaft!! Then you need to use the heat shrink method to get it back on once the shaft is in the boat. Sorry I didn't mention pressing it back off. The exception is if you have the engine pulled, then the shaft can go in fore to aft.

The proper procedure when R&Ring a shaft is to press the coupling back on the shaft, chuck the shaft up in the lathe and take a cut off the face. Chucking it by the shaft ensures it runs true to the shaft. DO NOT chuck the coupling on any of it's other surfaces.

What method did you use to remove the coupling to warp it? Hopefully not a gear puller on the coupling OD!!!
