You want your idle set to 650 in gear. Dont set it lower to obtain a slower idle speed. Get a shop tach and set it properly.

Turns out you were on the right track. I went out with Craig from Rich's Boardsports here in Madison this morning, and he determined it was because the idle speed was a bit low. Turns out my tach is reading way high, like 900 rpm when it is really at 500. So my options are to do nothing, and just speed up a bit if you hear the noise, or to have the idle speed set up 100+ rpm or so. I think I'll do nothing, as this boat already zips along (creating a small wake) when going as slow as I can. Otherwise it seems to be running fine.
Because the tach was so far off he suggested that I check in the back to make sure it is correctly set for a V-8. |

The 10 to 20 more hours shouldn't be a problem but, I wouldn't go more than that. If it is a damper, you could end up damaging the trans to a point of needing a rebuild.
Your idle RPM should be around 600 in gear in the water. |

I changed the trans fluid this spring, and it looked good. I will check on the idle RPM but it is slow and steady - seems just fine. If the problem is the damper plate how urgent is the fix? Will it make any difference if I wait another 10-20 hours?

What Pete said plus check the engine tune before you take the trans out. If you have a miss at low rpms, it will cause the damper to make that racket. What rpm's do you have at idle out of gear? Is the fluid clean and full?

Check your damper (drive plate) on the flywheel. If it's never been changed on a 78, it's overdue.

I have a '78 Ski Nautique with a Chevy 350. The engine runs well, there seems to be plenty of power, it idles well, etc. But a new clicking noise seems to be coming from the transmission when I am going slowly in forward or reverse. I think it goes away as I speed up, but may be drowned out by engine noise. Any ideas how to approach this? While the boat seems to be working fine, I've never had an old inboard like this, and would be interested in going out with someone who has transmission experience and could "put it through its paces". Any place or person near Madison Wi who could do that?
