Thanks for all those that gave me input. I installed the new steering cable, lubed, and replaced the rudder packing. We now have silky smooth steering again.
Sorry Zach, I didn't realize you were N3 when I ordered my cable. |

i'd say your problem is also the cable. mine was pretty smooth and easy to turn while idle but stiff under load. a new cable felt like i had power steering.

Does anyone have any thoughts on steering that is only hard to turn, when straightening (coming out of a turn) at speed?
Would this more likely be a rudder thing? The steering is very easy to move when parked or at idle. It also goes into the turn pretty easy at speed. It just takes some muscle to come out of the turn and get going straight again. |

Oh and on the price, Just so you all know Teleflex extended an offer to me to become a direct dealer of their product so I will have the opportunity to sell any cables much cheaper than I do now (I think I hope).

Thanks for the replies. I ordered a cable from White Lake and it will be here Monday. I am sure I will have questions as the project goes on.
I plan on following bhectus's rudder lubrication and cleaning step by step as well. |

That cable is a rack an pinion style and I am not aware of any kits. If you disconnect the cable at the helm and at the rudder then move each individually by hand you will be able to single out the cause of the tight steering. It's always good measure when replacing a cable to drop the rudder to clean it and re lubricate it to ensure smooth operation.
I stock that cable here at the shop. |

My steering has a lot of resistance when turning the wheel under power or sitting at idle or even on the trailer. I assume it may be the steering cable. Are there any kits offered with the helm and steering cable or do you have to purchase these pieces individually? Any sources would be great. I have a 1997 Nautique Super Sport. Thanks
P/s- The rudder is centered with the prop so not a load issue. |
