I heard back from the Tech. Guy at Teleflex. Not a surprise, they can't sell that part because of liability issues.

Yes, the word top is facing up. I haven't tried filing it yet. I called Teleflex today and left a message with the Tech Guy to see if that black piece is still available. Haven't heard back yet.

That 'tab' lock boss whatever you want to call it- did it have TOP written on it? It goes with TOP up..... As Kapla says- if it's all back together properly- that boss is worn out.

I guess I didn't explain that we'll. After replacing the spring the shifter lock is working exactly like it should when trying to force it into reverse (it wont move out of neutral) but I am able to force it into the forward position (without lifting the ring). It shifts smoothly both ways when lifting the ring (not forcing it).

now thats strange! check the cable at the transmission, the lever might be hitting the muffler and thus the hard reverse

Thank you. I replaced the spring and it worked pretty good. It's now locked completely from going in reverse although with some pressure it will still go in the forward position. I think that black piece that slides into the notch on the shifter is worn on the edge. I guess it's worn more on the forward side which is allowing it to slip out of the notch.

been there! but unfortunately y had to fix it after my kid accidentaly slammed the throttle in reverse! my wife was on board so she was able to control back the boat.
Its an easy fix, you need to replace a spring. here is my post on the subject. learning the hard way and since I fix it, its been performing great. sorry no pics on the repair |

I've got a 95 ski and the safety lock on the throttle control (black thing you lift up on to shift out of neutral) has not worked for several years. I was wondering if anyone has rebuilt this mechanism or if parts are available. I really can't tell if it needs a new spring or the little black piece that slides into the groove on the plate of the shifter or if the round plate of the shifter is worn out. Or if all of it is worn out. When they first came out with the shift locks I hated them and wanted to bypass them but being a father and having your child in the boat can change your perspective. I saw that they have a newer style control available now at White Lake that I may try if I can't rebuild the old one.
