For sure - nice n cheap. That VDO will do nicely. Also, on a positive note, after some use the key pad is back to its old self. had the first run of the year yesterday and all was well. all i need is the weather to improve slightly!

But check the gauge/connections first........

BTW - I can point you to the WEMA sender for 48 that is like the senders in your ballast tanks........a more elegant, but spendier solution.

I'll find one for you...PM Me. If you can easily get at it, touch the 2 sender wires together and see what happens..... If the gauge reacts to max...it is an incorrect sender......... We'll get you one!

Hey Brian,

The old teleflex guage was fine before i winterised - this was long after the engine replacement. I just replaced all the guages a couple of days ago and stuck the battery back in to find the fuel guage reading wrong and the key pad playing up. The faria documentation seems to point to the sender being incompatible but i'll double check the wiring tomorrow - the floor is out and tank easily accessed.

As for the keypad, it's in a box of rice on the radiator! I'll plug it back in and see how it behaves tomorrow. If still bad I'll open it up and have a look see - possible corrosion on the contacts, probably end up totally breaking it and then order a new one to the tune of 350 quid!

We have booked a weeks holidays on the lake at the beginning of April with friends coming over from England to join us so the boat will be working one way or another regardless of cost. I'm not fussed - anything is cheap compared to a new engine. I'll go without food in the meantime if I have to!

Darren, make sure your existing sender is properly grounded.

Not sure if a badly grounded sender reads full or empty...

But, in general, senders work on variable resistance to ground. Usually, ground is the engine block, if not the battery directly. So, in order for the sender to work, the tank, or some part of the sender outer ring, needs to be grounded to the block (then it essentially becomes part of the block).

It's common for these little ground wires to become corroded, broken, or disconnected.

Did this pop up before your engine replacement, or after?

BTW, did you ever get your keypad issue resolved? Didn't have an easy answer for that one.

That would make sense i guess. The guage reads nearly empty, but the tank is full! The guage is brand new and listed as 'European' on the site where i bought it so the sender issue makes sense.

Upon checking the site it seems that 10-180ohms is the range i need. i can find a cheap universal sender but the range is 3-150ohms. i'll keep looking for one thats spot on, i'll settle for a guage reading backwards in the meantime!

See if the fuel gauge is the right ohm range.... Most gauges now are Euro (10-180) but the VDO in Deep's 91 is Stewart-Warner (240-33).... See how range goes in opposite direction full to empty........

If needed, Fuel sender swap is super easy (once you get to the tank).... you don't specifically need Faria sender but you do need right ohm range... super inexpensive eBay universal units from VDO which are the correct ohms (10-180). ($18 bucks shipped...)

I would surf Faria's site to look at part #s and fuel gauge specs. PM me if you need more info.......... If you haven't, peek at the Faria info sheet posted above and compare to what your old sender's rating might be..... an easy test of gauge and wiring is to complete the circuit at the sender..... touch the gauge to the ground wire (there are only 2 wires at sender)..... gauge should peg one way or another depending on 240-33 vs 10-180 rated gauge. If gauge doesn't peg...... there's a gauge issue. Raria and VDO sites have good troubleshooting info.

sorry to chime in. i just replaced my guages with faria on my 2001 san. the fuel guage is reisitering really low, like 1/10 of a tank but the tank is full. do i need a faria sender? the original guages are teleflex?

Steve- you forgot to mention that "guy" just found three of
The four NOS vdo gauges you needed. I found an nos fuel gauge- but Someone doesn't want to swap the sender since he just bought a new one. The company has 9 white face 99.9 % correct looking 10-180 ohm fuel gauges on the shelf. Hurry or I may buy those all up too!

One trick when installing a Faria:

Instead of installing with a metal bar as backing, they have this plastic circle thing, that goes behind the dash vinyl and fastens the gauge.

You'll find that the the holes for the vinyl, are just four slices, that are pushed in, but don't interfere with the old style gauge, but they do interfere with the Farias.

Get yourself a good sharp exacto knife to get the slices out of the way. You'll see what I mean, not really a big deal I guess.

Also, the wire terminal ends are different. Not spades, but rings and posts. So, a little bit of minor crimping/soldering. Not straight plug and play.

BTW- I too have been looking for NOS VDO for replacements.... There aren't any. Someone on this site has snapped up any remainings ones..... He KNOWS who he is!

I do have a VDO corp recommended refurb place though............

Just for the "Original" record...... Check Summitracing.com for new replacement VDO Cockpit White gauges. They are REALLY close, Tach goes to 7 not 6, Temp goes a little higher and fuel is 180-10 ohm. All of the new ones look REALLY close but they have black screws in the face. The VDO are twice the price of the Teleflex and the Teleflex were used later in Nautiques......

The sender is an easy fix - there is a REALLY inexpensive lever-float style sender on eBay for about 18 bucks with free shipping.....Or you can go fancy with the $45 WEMA sender.

You can get your gauges totally redone for 3-4 times the cost of replacing them all.

Teleflex, Humminbird and Faria make nice depth finders that fit in the clock hole.

Yeah I had the $123 link too just posted the other one. I need a new hr meter and figured I would rather them look uniform before broken and original. I know where Pete was going but kinda hard to keep it original when the gauges aren't available.
My hr meter and clock are trashed, broken no glass. The others are in decent shape but wouldn't match. I will replace the worthless clock with a depth finder. So it looks like they work other than the fuel gauge. So what is the fix on that? Whats the part for the fuel sending unit?

Yes and no......

They will "fit" but:

1. Wayyy too expensive!
2. See if the fuel gauge is the right ohm range.... Most gauges now are Euro (180-10) but the VDO in your 91 is Stewart-Warner (240-33).
3. If needed, Fuel sender swap is super easy (once you get to the tank).
4. The other gauges will fit and hook right up.
5. No color caps are provided - you must add a blue, red, or amber color cap (or remove from current gauge bulb -if possible).

I actually bought that set - for half that price!
