Thanks 8122pbrainard That makes total sense. No zurk fitting on mine so I guess no grease. I may just put a little bit between the nut and the arm.

I wasn't going to remove the packing, but just add some grease before re-assembly.

I don't suppose the grease won't remove any play?

It is a lot better than before and I am also replacing the cable so it should be an improvement

Eric,
If your rudder port doesn't have a grease fitting, then it's not designed for grease. There are only a few years that had the grease Zurk. If it doesn't have it, you can grease but the grease will eventually wash out. Rudder port bores and the rudder shafts can be a pretty sloppy fit and if so can produce some rudder play, Most of the play is typically forward in the cable fittings and cable to the helm. You state "Depending on answers, I may remove and fill with grease". Hopefully you aren't thinking of removing the packing. It keeps the water from entering the boat!

Hi,

I read a few posts on rudder packing and replacing steering cable and I see some mixed reviews.

As far as I understand Nautique doesn't recommend using grease when servicing the rudder on 97SN.

Also I noticed when repacking a little play in the rudder port (not up and down but side to side)

Depending on answers, I may remove and fill with grease.

Thanks
