It looks like you got it squared away and I'm late to the party. But, this picture should help a little bit. It basically says if you have a 93-97 you have to look at the end of your cable to see which one you have. My understanding, is that at one point in time, the original style cable was not available, so someone would have to have had changed the cable and helm to the wider style. So, you really won't know what you have unless you are the original owner, without looking at the cable.

Glad to see you got it sorted and did not use that second hand cable when the new was so reasonably priced.

Thanks Chris!

I forgot to mention the cable ended up costing about $160.

So I finally got my steering cable after waiting over a month for the dealer to order it (long story).

I ordered the SSC12420 and when it came in I messured it side by side with my old one. It was exactly 1/2 foot longer just like I expected (they don't made half foot incriments anymore).

Other than that, they were identical. Here is a picture of the two racks side by side.

It went right in and only took me 15 min to get it hooked up and bolted in.

I don't have a comparison for original rudder throw but this looks very resonable to me. Anyone following this thread that might be in this situation in the future, my old cable froze at the fullty extended position. I extended my new cable and checked the distance it traveled and they were the same.

gonna hafta change the helm too. unless there is something I'm missing.
should just be a cable and helm change unless you want tilt too then you get new tilt too. If I'm not mistaken it's just that simple.

The racks are different sizes, I couldn't get them side by side because 1 is in the boat the other was laying over the gunwhale. Give me a couple of days and I'll have time to get the cable pulled, I still have to get the seat out and finish thanking the stereo apart.

The pictures of old vs new look like the difference between 1.75" vs 1.25" or ssc124 vs ssc134 cables. They are two different cables altogether.

The difference, if there is one, is between the two racks. Do you have a picture of the 2 racks side by side?

OK, I'm not finding much difference in the parts so I'm questioning my setup a little. It will be easier to measure things when I get them all out of the boat, there is a size and fit difference between the 2 so pieces aren't interchangeable.

For now I need to tarp this back up and get back to work on the bilge, I'll have more time on Thursday for measurements, and I think I can still get my old cable out of the dumpster to check it as well.

Don it would be good if you could clarify if your old helm was a Morse unit.

I think we may have covered some ground here that Skidim had already traveled.

All good information for future reference on this amazing resource site. CC sure did some changing about with there early rack and pinion setups.

I also remember Jody mentioning something in a old thread about the rack and pinion steering systems. He and Art would be able to confirm what happened back at the factory. Cool when we can have it confirmed by the people who actually made these boats.

If you're going through hell, keep going

For what it's worth that is about the same thing Art Cozier told me. I sent him pictures of my setup and he made a comment that this was a model that I didn't have to worry about the throw.

Don I think you are confusing the cable helm and with the rack. The steering cable for cable helm 1982-1990 was a OEM part only that had a different throw to the standard cables. This cable was only available through dealers.

Here is the SSC12420 Cable from Go2Marine

The rack cable has the same throw. Does not mater if it is purchased at the dealer, Teleflex or elsewhere.

Don you may have had the Morse rack helm that was only used from 91-92 according to Skidim. Must have had some left over for your 93 Excel. This is what is causing the confusion. Chris will have the Teleflex helm on his 96 Tique that will take the Teleflex cable.

Don if you can find a difference please let me know. At this point I've talked to boat dealers, marine distributors, and teleflex themselves. Nobody can find a difference as long as the cable says ssc12420 on it.

This is one of those little details that could have slipped through the cracks so if you have both of them, maybe you can bust this myth.

Just so you're not confused, that was a special cable mate for CC, the only place to get it is from a dealer.    The new one has a wider and thinner rack, bolt holes line up but the gears won't touch. I haven't put the old and the new helm together to check the difference, but I can if you want to see and I get home in time.

So I just got off the phone with the man at teleflex. Super cool guy that had finally laid this question to rest.

First........my odd number on the original cable. It was the old coding that signified 1/2 feet. My cable is 19.5 feet in the boat so it was coded as 79. They don't make 1/2 foot sizes anymore.

Second and most importantly..........the throw. He has never known of a difference in travel as long as they've made these cables. He said at one point it was probable that the gear ratio of the rack changed but that would only equate to more or less turns of the wheel to achieve the same rudder deflection.

Third.........the designation of the rack dimension. SSC124 = 1.25" rack. I know we have already established this but for the sake of anyone in this situation in the future, he said ORDER A SSC12420. Supposedly they are All the same.

I will be ordering with confidence later this week.

OH! That makes complete sense. Thanks, Benj. I was not thinking about the impact flipping over the rack would have on the other end of the line.

The direction of the rack will depend on which way the rudder tiller arm faces (port vs. stbd), which is opposite the side CC put the single exhaust on. I know my '90 had the cable run down the port side, but I believe CC switched sides sometime in the mid 90's... so that may explain the difference youre seeing.

So, I just called Go2Marine and talked to their steering cable guy. I gave him the original number off my cable that's in the boat and of course, he was thrown off by the last digits (ssc12479). The last two digits obviously indicates the length of the cable from the rack to the stop fitting.

We both agreed the boat was not 79ft long and had a discussion about the rack width. He knew right away that I needed the 1.25" rack. I asked him if the size of the rack effects the throw at all and he claimed "no" quite confidently. He said the "ssc124" part of the cable number is the same weather it's OEM or not. This makes sense because there is no way to increase throw of a cable without increasing the length (not width) of the rack. If you look at the link I posted to nautiqueparts.com, it looks like the length of both size racks are about the same.

For me to switch to the 1.75" helm with my adjustable steering wheel would cost over $300 not including the cable.

Sorry I'm not saying your wrong but I just want to cover all my angles so I don't wind up with a reduced maneuverability. All the cables I've researched have the same hardware and the only variable is the length of the teleflex. I feel like I'm getting close to a revelation. Is there a known dimension or documented detail about throw or are we just talking about how they feel.

I'm not being a smart a$$ or sarcastic, I'm just trying to see the picture in the puzzle.

The new cable won't fit on the old helm, the tilt is the same mechanism. The trow on the new cable is shorter so you loose a little bit of angle on the rudder at each end. On the Excel, which is the worse handling boat they ever made, that was a big deal at speed, not really noticeable at idle or going straight.    My turning radius probably got 20ft larger which makes a big difference in a river with concrete walls on each side.   I could make the turn, but the wheel was all the way to lock, very weird feeling knowing there is no room for error and hoping you hit your mark when you started to turn.   I could drive it, but I worried about letting others do it who didn't realize it didn't drive the same since you had to get very close to the walls and docks on both sides.   If I stayed in open water it might not have ever been an issue.

Mark once again thank you. Great information.

I will put an order out as soon as I determine the correct length and I will document the process here for anyone in the same predicament.

One question however, what is the advantage of the newer (wider) helm gear? Would you notice any difference in handling or is it one of those "nice to have" situations?

Chris I think that is a good plan measure your existing cable. That link to go2Marine also has the video on the way to measure steering cables.

The last 2 digits signify the length in feet of the cable. I doubt though your original cable is 79 feet long.

The SSC124XX back mount rack cables will fit onto your original helm. This makes it a more cost effective repair than replacing the helm in addition to the fitment of the new style SSC134XX rack cables. These new style cables (SSC134XX) use the TFXtreme technology in them. Not sure if the older style SSC124xx have that option available.

I doubt you will find these old style rack cables at your average Nautique dealership. If so they may be just be old stock. Skidim list the new style TFXtreme cables in lengths from 15-24 feet.
Skidim SSC134 Rack Cables

Buying the old style SSC124XX cable new for $140 is much better than purchasing a second hand cable. If money was no obstacle changing to new style helm and new SSC134XX TFXtreme cable could be better long term option.

Hope this clears it up for you.

Don by "the new one" are you referring to the one in the link from mark?

What about
This one?

Does this come in the old helm style?

What made you distrust the new style cable? Did it feel different? What are you using now and where did you get it?

The new cheaper cable cost is offset by the fact that you have to buy the new helm to use it, it's pretty much a wash for the first one. You will save money on the second if you still have the boat then.   I tried the new one and didn't like it. On my boat it made me very nervous to turn around at speed in the river arm where we ride. Nothing gets your attention like being halfway through a turn and wondering if the boat will make it or if its going to hit the shore.

Thanks again mark for looking that up. I call tomorrow and see how familiar they are with my boat.

Later this week when I get home I will pull the old cable out and measure it. Everyone I've talked to about this cable says its the same one as the 196's.

I think I literally talked to too many people when researching these and everyone had a different idea about what I had. It started to get a little confusing.

Chris the direct Teleflex replacement cable is only $195 OEM is $299.

This is not like the older rotary steering cables where you had to buy OEM to get the correct throw length.

The rotary racks changed in 98 to the wider 1.75" compared to the earlier 1.25".

If your helm is still ok you can just buy a cable to suit your earlier helm.

I would think on the Tique you could get away with a shorter cable than 20'

The SSC12479 number you have looks to be a old Teleflex number.

Try this Cable link Go2M

Continuing the steering problem, here is the link to the replacement.

Cable

You'll notice that the original racks are smaller than the new ones. Guess which one I have

They start at $300 and the helm is another $125.

That's why I was interested in the used cable for the time being. If it was in good condition and the size I needed, it could have been a temp fix until I get the funds back to replace everything.

My cable right now is completely seized. I'm of the mentality of doing things the right way and I know most of you have seen my progress with this boat, but I'm running low on boat money. Most people send a few years overhauling their projects, but all of mine have come within a month of purchase and I haven't even bought new manifolds yet.

Ill get through it but that's why I was looking at a used cable.
