Awwwww today the perfect solution popped up at the MC-forum; someone selling his wrecked Prostar. Same year, same engine as the X-Star. Someone else there can use most of the other parts, sow e could get it together and the other guy would part it out and ship the engine. Ideal!
But.
My friend contacted the seller to make an offer... Seller says it's too low because it doesn't need a new engine, that the current engine can be fixed. Said to check the boat out together and with a mechanic.
So; another trip that way, probably for nothing cause he thinks he has a good boat, and even if we can work something out this engine will probably be gone.

Oh well, at least I still have my 2001 that I love dearly. Just would've been nice...

Hellofellows! Had to leave this project for what it is for a couple days, since I just became father of a little boy!
Planning to make an offer tomorrow, see if we can grab it for next to nothing. If not we'll really have to dig into it, tear it down like GlassSeeker said, to see what it exactly is.
For now that Mercruiser seems like the best option, I'll contact the seller of that adapter if it seems we'll get the boat.

No used available, Rebuilt in the states and shipped? I rebuilt my 92 SN motor, but it was all there and in decent shape. What about the guy in North central Florida, is on craigslist (Orlando)all the time with used ?

As long as your v drive is OK...the DD engine will bolt up using the existing parts of the blown up engine...parts that "probably" are not blown up or rusted out.

This is one reason that I kept telling you that until you tear it down you will not know what all you will need.

If you buy it, buy it complete. because you will be able to salvage some parts off the engine plus it will have the necessary mounting hardware to attach any small block Chev to the v drive.

I'm wondering how bad the electrical system and gauges are, if you knew that they were all bad then you would need all new gauges, wiring harness and engine. In that case you could use any brand you wanted to use...if you get a Merc you get a merc wiring harness and merc gauges.

If you stick with Indmar you can probably order all new parts and have no compatibility issues.

Call the guys who sell that adapter and ask if it will do it with the boat/ engine you are trying to use.

Found another Mercruiser that comes out of a direct drive (Malibu Response). What's involved in putting a DD-engine in a V-drive boat?

maybe...there is an adapter on ebay from Indmar to Mercruiser so it "might" be doable.

yeah I've been working with Miaminautiques a bit in the past. But good idea; I sent them an email.
This is a logistical nightmare logistical nightmare (anyone in Vegas?) but it might be an option. Any idea how easily(/hard) a Mercruiser would fit?

Although you would have to change some wiring and probably the exhaust hookup, a PCM engine will give you the same results. Not that I greatly favor one over the other, but PCMs are more available. Even a 351 (5.8 L) will work fine for you, as long as you make sure to get the bellhousing, and might be even more available than 350s. However, I'm starting to lean a bit toward what SNobsessed said, is it really worth all the hassle?

I would recommend that you contact Miami Ski Nautiques in Miami, FL and ask some questions of them. They export a lot of used ski boats of all brands to Latin America and you might find something that will add up to the same money without all the hassle. The salesperson that I know best there is Luke.

Ha, nice one. No, it's not going to be as cheap as we expected/hoped it would be. I'm thinking of making a super low offer, to have it up and running for less than 15K. Considering the fact that boats are about 30% more expensive here than in the US that would still be "not bad".
Finding a good used Indmar from a wrecked boat would be the ideal scenario.

What can you use from the wrecked one? nothing? you need to figure this out.

yes the block could be any gm 350 5.7 block of similar age but I'd try to stick to Indmar stuff.

you need so much stuff that the bobtail is the way to go. get an indmar. so you get plug and play.

It won't be easy and it won't be cheap, especially in Costa Rica.

Should I look to get another Indmar engine, or would any 350 work? Any ideas where to find a wrecked boat (with good engine)?

Thanks for your help everyone. It is indeed a Mastercraft, a 2001 X-Star with 310hp Indmar LTR VRS 5.7L EFI.

It's a Mastercraft but...

I'm going to guess that saltwater is the culprit, or that the engine was not being flushed after use in saltwater, or that it had its catastrophic failure and then was parked for 5 years with saltwater in the engine.

you may be able to salvage some of the parts but Art is right you are going to need a whole new engine "Bobtail"

If you are running in salt water switch to a closed cooling system at the same time.

This caught my eye, so thought I'd try to offer some help. If it is a Correct Craft, the engine has been changed out after the boat was new. To my knowledge, we have never set an Indmar. The "L" in the engine serial number indicates to me that it's a left-hand )("standard") rotation, but again I don't know a lot about Indmar.

This does look like a candidate for a replacement engine. The simplest solution would be a "bobtail" engine from DIM or some other source. That means an engine with manifolds, water pumps, starter, and everything but the transmission, as opposed to a "base engine" which would be without any external accessories. It could be more practical to replace it with a PCM, but that is for you to decide after studying it. Another decision would be to go fuel injection or carbureted. There is a distributor here in Orlando who I know exports engines. The email addresss is JAChamb@aol.com

It wen't kaboom.

The 350 in the Skylark was so rusty internally even with all of the head bolts out a chisel between the head and block and a 10lb hammer the heads wouldn't budge.

Given the weather in Costa Rica ruling out freezing, I'd say lost the raw water pump, overheated and seized. Still surprised at how that manifold cracked though.

I agree, look for a replacement engine.

What is the boat?

You can see the port side elbow is cracked damn near in half.
That thing is an 8 cylinder aquarium. The entire rolling assembly is likely shot.
Shop for a good running crate engine. Complete package, pay once and bolt it in. Heavy freight from the states wont be too bad.

pull the whole engine out and figure out what all needs to be replaced.
the block and heads may be just as cracked as those manifolds(tubes)

Well, finally had a chance to check out this boat. Trailer, hull, upholstery: all good. But then the engine: I guess "it needs some new tubes" is the Costa Rican way of saying "it needs a new engine".

I don't know what would be cheaper (read: less expensive) and better; a rebuild or a new block. How much is a new block? What's a good place to find one? Anyone know if it's LH or RH rotation ($800 difference at skidim).

Is it definitely a salt water boat? If so, and not properly flushed like John said, it will have a lot of potential problems after sitting for 5 years.

If it's a fresh water boat, 5 years isn't necessarily going to cause any harm. No reason the steering cable, control cables, etc. are bad. Go on the assumption they didn't put it up properly before it sat, and you may have an injection system with crud in it, stale gas with water in it in the tank. Engines that sit for a long time shouldn't just be cranked over. The preferred method would be to manually spin the oil pump to prime the engine after that amount of time. If you can't do that, at least spray fogging oil or light oil in each spark plug hole before turning it over at all, though that won't lubricate the valve train.

What exactly is the boat?
