Nixon changed it to 55. Think it varied by state before that, it was before my time, I got my liscence in 77.

In Metro ATL they recently eliminated all the HOV lanes which encourage carpooling, alternative-fuel vehicles, etc and changed them all to toll lanes ("Express Lane") Now you can only drive in this lane if you are willing to pay on a variable rate...low traffic times you pay less, peak times pay more. To participate you get a "Peach Pass" electronic doohickey and if you move into this lane the overhead sensors note this and bill your credit card accordingly. Current rate is posted on overhead electronic signs, as low as 15 cents to over $7 dollars.

These lanes are now rarely/lightly traveled so the state can save on paving cost. No more incentive to carpool leaving people alone to drive and text in peace and solitude. The state makes a few more bucks, and I'm sure they company that administers it makes some serious coin. Gridlock? Oxygen is highly overrated anyway.

Whats a tollway? Don't they pay gas taxes to fund your roads? Then tolls too?????We mostly let people drive for free here!!

Growing up bordering Wisconsin, Minnesota plates on your vehicle was the same as painting pull me over please on your back bumper. Wisconsin was known for ticketing at 5 mph over the posted, especially for out of state money. That has stayed with me, when in doubt of the local tolerances, don't take chances. Add increased concerns for safety of the wife and kids, and navigating in unfamiliar territory, and you get very different driving habits from what I would do at "home"

When I (and many of us) was your age, the National Speed Limit was 55 MPH. Think about that at 75-80.

Fuel economy no issue here, I get 35+mpg...so good that it justifies my boat storage expense. Long ago I calculated the fuel cost of trailering it around would exceed the $150/mo I pay to keep it there in a nice indoor rack storage barn. Now just give a quick call on the ride over and it's sitting at the dock when we get there, and when done we just tie up and head back home...plus no stress or wasted time at the ramp.

Depends on flow but typically 73 will get you tailgated down here. State law supposedly prohibits police agencies (state patrol exempt) from issuing speeding tickets less than 10mph over posted speed limit. I also might add that I wouldn't do 80 with out-of-state plates, or without my radar detector. And the Honorary Member-Georgia Sheriffs Association 2013 plate in the back window sure can't hurt....

GA Superspeeder Law adds $200 to any ticket over 84 plus mucho points, so if you're passing thru keep it below warp speed.

Indiana is 70 on interstates. So is MI. I used to be more of a speed deomn back when. Now the truck gets best economy between 70 and 73 so I usually press go at 73 and call it a day. Doesn't rais any eyebrows from authorities either.

Rarely see troopers stop someone, interstate speed traps typically local sheriff or pd generating revenue from their patch of highway.
And yes, think out-of-state (particularly yuppie-cars) is a disadvantage; never once seen a pickup with GA tags stopped.

Interestingly, read an article a while back (not sure if still true)that due to budget cuts, troopers will no longer patrol I16 from Macon to Savannah (180 miles) at night, barracks will be closed, and any calls automatically forwarded to the local sheriffs office.

Not a great decision safety-wise, there's always a steady stream of container trucks going thru this corridor from Port of Savannah to ATL, and these are typically the crappiest most-unsafe trucks on the road cause these loads pay so low.

WI, and IL are 65. MI may be too, don't recall. MN is 70, and 76-78 is perfectly acceptable.
