Does your system have a pulsation dampener in it. Some of the later speedo systems didn't use them. It would be a tall narrow "tank" typically mounted on the transom. If the pickup is plugged (check it next) then water may not have drained from the dampener. They will freeze and crack. If you do have one, check it for leaks too.

How much air pressure did you use when you did get the speedo to react?

Matt,
Like Steve ^^ I too am concerned about damage from too much pressure but that wasn't my first thought. If you applied enough pressure, it would overcome leaks in the system hence you would get the speedo to work with the compressed air but not in the water.

You pickup is flipped in the down position correct?

I think many of us reading your post are worried that the speedos were over pressurized upon checking.... very low psi (under 10) will deflect a speedo needle....... or, if you were lucky, fittings were cracked or separated from one another as a result of high psi applied .....mouth puffs on the tubes going to the speedos should create a deflection in the needles... may wish to recheck if high psi applied.....

Matt,
How much air pressure did you apply and where? On the pitot tubing or the pick up? They max out at about 30 PSI. Did you check for leaks in the pitot tubing?

Btw, it's not a vacuum line.

Also, don't trust the speedo. Get a GPS.

I have an 86 Ski Martinique and tested the vacuum line and speedometer with an air compressor from the exterior of the boat. The speedometer maxed out but when I put it in the water it doesn't work. Any ideas how to fix it? I have had the boat for 3 years and have no idea how fast it is.... kind of sucks.
