External cracks are best repaired using a method call "st*tching". St*tching involves drilling a serious of overlapping holes along the crack, threading and plugging the hole before drilling the next overlapping hole.

Yeah, Im building a 283 right now for one of my tugs. The marine donor motor was originally a 307, but had been left outside,got water in cylinders, and ruined the block.
The 283 came from a 1967 chevy pickup truck. Im using all the "marine stuff" from the 307(distributor, timing gears, cam,intake,etc.)

As for just taking the marine parts from one to the other, first concern would be engine rotation direction. Cars run LH ,Lots of boats run RH
And as a couple guys already said ,if crack is external, have it repaired?

If it turns backwards use your old camshaft.

I agree with Jeff if its a crack limited to the water jacket you can weld it up and keep it running. Welded one on a supra for a friend took about 20 minutes and he has been using it for the last 4 years with no signs of quitting. But as an answer to your question there is no difference in the blocks, if your not going to bore it out you might need to be a little careful on the clearance between the cylinders and the walls but no bit deal otherwise.

   Did it destroy the block to the point where the engine wont run, or is it just cracked and water comes pouring out when running? If its just a crack, a good welding guy can burn in some nickel rod and grind it smooth for much less $.

I have a 1988 american skier with a 351w
that is cracked at the front right of the block. Can I use a car or truck block & transfer the marine parts to it or do I need to buy a forged marine block? Thanks
