Either way you are replacing that impeller so do that, verify you are putting the right hose in the bucket, and try again.

Spoke too soon. I took the impeller off and 2 of the fins are cracked halfway through. Would this be enough not to pull any water suction?

No I did not try to prime the hose by pouring any water in it. I'll do that next time
The impeller looks good from what I can tell. No melting, scoring, or cracks on any blades. The gasket looked good too.

You did not hook up the wrong hose. Any of them on the suction side of the RWP will work. If you use the hose between the RWP and trans cooler, you just won't cool the trans. However, since the trans takes some time to warm up, that hose would be ok too. Mkae sure you tell us (picture would be great) of what you find about the RWP impeller condition. |

So I hooked up to the wrong hose then? The one I connected to routed to the front of the engine.
I only ran it for about 7 seconds waiting for the hose to start sucking water from the bucket. The exhaust manifolds were barely warm. |

Matt, Your link didn't work so here's a new one. I saw the picture with the hand pointing to a hose. If that's the one you used, it's the outlet and not the inlet. It goes from the strainer to the trans cooler. From the trans cooler, it go's to the RWP. Did you try to prime the suction side of the RWP in any way? Pouring some water down the suction side hose is always a good idea. Have you ever run the engine without water even briefly? If so, there's a good chance the impeller was trashed. It's water lubricated. Even if you haven't run it without water, I suggest taking a look at the impeller. It's in the RWP!

I am almost positive I used the inlet as it was the bigger diameter hose and was leading to the engine. It was the one running under the driveshaft like in the picture here:

Matt,
Did you put the strainer inlet or discharge hose in the bucket? I ask since if you used the inlet, check the gasket of the strainer. Have you removed the RWP say to replace the impeller? May have installed it backwards!! On your leak - remove the plug, chase the threads with the proper pipe tap, clean up the plug and reinstall it along with some Teflon tape. Since pipe taps are tapered, don't go very deep as that will make the threads too large. Go maybe 1/2 turn when the tap starts cutting. That will just clean up the treads. |

I tried to run my 83 Nautique in my driveway for the first time using the bucket method that is listed all over this site. I took the large hose off the water strainer and put it directly in to a bucket of water, but with the engine idling it was not sucking any water through.
One of the manifolds had a slow drip leak out of one of the plugs, but other than that, I couldn't see anything wrong. What should I check for? |
