I too would think you'd get water in your oil rather than the other way around but I suppose anything is possible

Ok, as always thanks for the info. Just needed to be pointed in the right direction. I thought cooler leak before Chris said it but thought "no way" . I guess we'll see. Thanks, Tony.

No Tony what Chris is saying is if you don't see it anywhere, like dripping into the bottom of the boat,it must be going out thru the cooler. So the trans itself is not the leaker the cooler would be. If your sure it's not in the bottom of the boat and is really changing level you could change the cooler or try testing by plugging one oil line fitting and applying air to the other. Submerge in water and see if air comes out the water hose sides. Don't go crazy on the air pressure either.

Ok so it's probably a leak. Is this a rebuild situation or a seal gone bad?

I would just keep adding ATF until fall. The only other place it could be going (besides the bilge) is through the oil cooler into the raw water.

Guys, checked the fluid level tonight and it was a little low again. Once I put almost a half quart in it it was all fine. I had instant movement like I should in both forward and reverse. My question now is , is it leaking? How often do you normally add fluid to a boat transmission? I would think I would have a leak somewhere but I don't see one. How should I proceed? I am pulling it this fall to fix a rear main seal leak. Should I have it looked at? It has been working just fine until recently. I don't want to pull it twice. Thanks,Tony.

It is hard to see. I pull the dip stick and rub my thumb on the safe spot to see if its wet. I don't think it's leaking anywhere. Yeah if it needs rebuilt I would like to send it out this fall.

Tony - I have a very hard time reading the dipstick against the red fluid, so maybe it is still low. You might want to overfill it some.
What do you have to lose if it needs a rebuild anyway? Excess fluid will just be thrown out the vent. |

I have this transmission issue and I'm not sure what its doing. I thought it was a fluid level thing but I'm not sure. When I put the boat in forward or reverse I have no movement until I give it a little more throttle. Looking at it in the garage tonight the shift cable looks to be moving the shift lever properly. I am going to get the boat on the water tomorrow night and I'm going to try and see what it's doing. The shaft spins freely. The boat was flawless Friday night and all day Saturday but when I went to put the boat back on the trailer Sunday there the problem was again. Last time I had this issue I topped off the trans and it was fine. Thoughts?? Thanks, Tony.
