Ron, The fretting comes from a misaligned shaft and is not caused by a press/heat shrink fit. |

That makes sense. Guess I was focused on the fretting that can happen with a simple press fit.
Anyways, got the strut and shaft installed tonight and am pretty psyched with the results. Shaft just about perfectly centered in the log and spins like butter. 5200 cleaned up with acetone and no sticky mess. Gonna let it set up overnight then align engine tomorrow so we can water test and hopefully use the boat this weekend. Thx Ron |

Ron,
I missed answering your question on "coupling failure". It's not the coupling that fails, it's the shaft that breaks. They will break if the alignment is off. Every revolution of the shaft causes flex and the from fatigue the shaft breaks. So, it doesn't matter if you have a single or double taper shaft. |

It doesn't matter if you have a single or double taper shaft, no dimples are needed for the shaft "safety" collar. |

Set screws enough to hold shaft in the boat if coupler fails? Is that basically a non issue with the double taper shaft?

Ron, I had a full collar on my old shaft before I got my ARE. I put it on my new Are shaft. No dimples to drill. Just set screws to hold it in place. Get it on. You'll love it! Tony.

Just got my replacement ARE shaft - wow! It looks so good I'm hesitant to put it on - just want to put it on the workbench and stare at it - it's a piece of art.
Anyways, noticed there are no dimples for a safety collar. What do most of you running these shafts do? Split collar? I would be pretty hesitant to drill dimples into this. Thx Ron |
