The only thing you can check using only a multimeter is the charge condition of the battery. A fully charged battery will read 12.6 volts. If the voltage is higher it is said that the battery has a "surface charge". To test any more than this you'll need a battery load tester. Most places that sell batteries will have one. Take it and have it tested. That's the easiest!

Alternator is off and off to the auto electrician.
I'll check out the battery to see whether it's all freaked out etc. Is there any way I can test this..ie testing voltage with a multimeter etc? |

You certainly want to get that fixed. It probably boiled the batt over and killed it. If acid got out of the batt box, it would be a good idea to flush the hull front to back.

I think it's the voltage regulator, noticed the alternator was charging at 18V all day. I thought this was indeed unuusal but the smell must have taken away my wits and I didn't connect the two things... So I guess I'll be pulling of ther alternator for a repair this Monday. |

If it were your battery, you would see some fresh acid coming out of it if you can smell it like that. If it does, then your alternator is overcharging the batt and has a problem. Sulfur smell usually smells like a match. Usually vehicles when you work them will burn crap out of the catalytic converter due to the heat which smells like that. Never heard of it in a boat though.

Hi,
The past couple of weekends I've gone in my '76 boarding the boat has emitted a god awful sulphur smell. Seems to be coming from the under the bow and only when engine is running. I get under when the boat is stopped and it smells okay.. Considering there is sulphuric acid in the battery do I have a battery issue? Overcharging or something that means I should replace it? Thanks |
