Woodboy, what you want is either a YLU-554-CV or a YLM-554-CV, the YLU is more expensive and has an optical pick-up vs a magnetic for the YLM

If you have a standard rotation engine then order a 554-DV the CV is reverse rotation, different gear

I installed the Prestolite marine breaker distributor yesterday along with new PCM plug wires and a new PCM coil. I also installed the new Holley Marine 4160 carb. Man let me tell you the engine has never run this good. I set the timing to PCM specs and it just purrs. Fires instantly no matter if having set for 30 seconds or 30 minutes. the new Owner is going to be very pleased.

The new Owner and I are heading to the lake tomorrow for final testing/tuning and a bit of instruction on how to drive an inboard boat. So, I will know more about the advance curve on the new distributor, but I am confident it will be good.

BTW, I did NOT have to switch the drive gears.

David - I'm curious about the ebay prestolite distributors.. Where any modifications required? Does the advance work well?

Yep, I think you are correct about swapping drive gears. Last year I experimented with making my own Prestolite/GM magnetic pickup HEI setup. I had to swap the gears then, but went back with the old distributor as I never could get the frankenstein to run like I wanted.

I would suggest you lay the two side by side before you install and make sure the housing are the same and that the gear is the same as well. Worst come to worst you may have to swap gears but it's pretty easy just drive out the roll pin and slide it off.

I believe I am going to go with the Mallory YLM554CV. It is the Marine magnetic pick up unit that sells for $240.00 via Summit Racing.

Anyone have a less expensive source or brand?

BTW, I have a LH (conventional) rotating engine.

Mallory now has a magnetic pickup instesd of the optic style. The new magnetic one for marine is much more stable, but both are good. However the optic unit cost about 90 and some dollars to replace, and should carry a spare.

I believe that is the "Unilite" version. I once had a mallory unilite distributor installed in my 1970.5 Rally Sport Camaro and it worked flawlessly for many years.

However, for a $70 premium just to sell does not make it a worthwhile investment for me at this point. Peach of mind and reliabilty at a cheaper price is what I am after.

Hi David
A good alternative to replacing you whole distributer is to replace the points with a electronic ignition kit.
I have replaced my points with a product from
/www.pertronix.com/
Its called Ignitor electronic ignition.
Takes about 10 minutes to install.
Just follow the instructions.
It replaces the points in your distributor with a hall effect pick up and a new rotor button. The new rotor button has 8 magnets in the base.
Works very well. I have seen other posts from people say they are happy with the product as well.
Don't know the cost as I am in Australia and paid in Aussie Dollars, probably much cheaper in the US.

I also thought the caps were sealed to the distributor via a gasket.

My current distributor is vacuum advance. It runs well, but I am sure a distributor with proper mechanical advance for a marine engine would perform better. Also, I think it would be best to get rid of the points for the new owner so he has one last thing to worry about (i.e. not mechanically inclined).

So far, I am leaning toward a Mallory marine unit #MAA-YLM554CV at $240.00

Glad you found a good home for your Martinique. I'm the same way. I have a hard time selling something if I know it isn't right. Heck I even replaced all the mirrors on my old 68 pickup before I GAVE it to one of my brothers. BKH

Ok, I have my '77 Martinique tentatively sold to a friend (I know, bad mistake). The only thing I am concerned with is the automotive distributor. This issue did not bother me because I am very diligent in check the integrity of the fuel delivery system...so not much worry for me of starting a fire/explosion.

However, the potential liability of selling the boat to someone without the proper marine distributor gives me pause for concern. So, I am thinking of replacing the distributor with a breakerless marine unit. BTW, I purchased the boat with automotive carb, fuel pump, distributor, starter and alternator. I have since changed all over the years EXCEPT the distributor.

Suggestions on best distributor deals welcomed. Thanks in advance.
