Got a pair of Bose 901s at a garage sale years back. The foam was rotted and had deteriorated. Got the repair kit on line and did it myself. Turned out great. They sound great.
Picked up a Yamaha CR-2020 at the same garage sale. Sent that off to Soundsmith in New York for repair. Have made a good combination in my office. |

The hardest part will be getting all the old glue and foam off the cone. My stereo is in a corner kitchen cabinet I got free when my brother in law was remodeling. It's plenty deep.

Thank you Mark. That's what I was looking for. I don't know anyone who has done it. I notice by your profile that you have serious skills. Ill give it a try.

If you order the kit for your specific speakers, you should be in good shape. I repaired a set several years back and as far as I can tell, once the job was done, they sounded as good as ever and have held up well even after being "cranked up to 11". The repair was not all that difficult....a few hours total for both speakers.

8 tracks? looks more "reel to reel" to me! btw, let me know how your refoam turns out my shop speakers (some old Sony's) just bit the dust. thankfully I had some old Fishers that are filling in just fine. |

Thanks Tim
There are a lot of people selling foam kits that are listed specifically for the A70 so I ASSUME the profile is correct. Boston A70 foam Humidity is not a problem since the garage is heated to a constant temperature and our daily drivers are not allowed to enter this half and drop their slush. Humidity normally runs 10-20% according to my cheap and probably imprecise instrument. Dust is a concern but most of the messy work is done in the other half so I don't think it is excessive. The cabinet is a good idea but i would have to build one since the components are much deeper than any standard cabinets i have seen. It's really just old junk anyway. I had the Sony amp re-capped about two or three years ago. I have an old Marantz that needs to be re-capped as well. I have a place for it up north if I decide to do it. |

Changing the surround is easy. Make sure you get the right profile, the inside edge/lip. Some are horizontal and some are diagonal. You can replace the foam cheaper than buying aftermarket drivers. Sometimes it's hard to find drivers that are the same ohms and that match the volume of the cabinet. I replaced a set of Bostons and later sold them to a friend. I my garage, my stereo is in a cabinet. I don't know how bad humidity is in your area, but I have to put those little tubs in the cabinet to absorb moisture. High humidity isn't good for home stereo, especially CD players. I used simplyspeakers.com or speakerworks.com I can't remember which one.

It works fine, I just flipped the switch to "digital mode". BTW I gave my old 8 track cassettes to a guy with a factory 8 track player at a car show a couple years ago. I hope the Greatful Dead one didn't have any doses in it. |

Thanks, I spoke before I checked. I found that the "fusebulbs" are now available through a guy on EBay. I ordered them.
There are replacement drivers available but if I can repair the foam that should be all they need. They were OK when they were new and I like the sound when they are driven by a big old amp. They aren't worth anything, but they go well with the rest of the old junk I have there. Now that I started sorting out the old stuff I think I'm ready to part with an old pair of Magnapans. I see they are still in business. Surprise surprise. |

Pete alert, I don't think that MP3 dock is keeping it original! You need some 8 tracks!

John, the kits are pretty cheap and can be had at partsexpress.com. I would just give it a try, you could also try to find the specs on the driver you're trying to fix and buy a replacement driver from PE. I had a pair of those Boston Acoustics a long time ago.
As for the led get a hold of forum member rain dog, he is doing same thing on a preamp right now. he built some crossovers today for a set of reference speakers I'm building, give me a couple of weeks and I'll share some photos. |

Well, maybe not old guys, but those of you with old stereo knowledge. I remember a stereo discussion a few years back.
I have been putting the finishing touches on my garage for the last 6 months now and I just hooked up the stereo. I have an old pair of Boston Acoustics A70 series II that I have liked through the years, but the speaker foam suspension has begun to break down. There are a few shops I could send them to but it is a bit costly. I am considering ordering a speaker foam suspension kit and attempting it. It doesn't look very difficult but I would like to hear from someone who has done it. Anyone out there with advice? Here is the old stuff I have owned since the early 70s. I also need to repair the illumination in the Harmon Kardon tuner. The lights burned out years ago and as of about 10 years ago they were NLA. With the variety of LED products out there now I can probably solder something in that will work. With all of the digital media and internet choices I will probably never use it, but it looks good lit up. . |
