On the dripless seals, you don't have to worry about rust or anything damaging the sealing surface. SO I would go ahead and install one while the engine is out.

My stuffing box is real hard to get to(v-drive). I was thinking about going to a dripless while the engine was out. Then I realized you have to have a cooling line going in to it, and I'm worried that some rust particles and junk will break free from inside the engine (very old), and ruin the packing. So now I think I will repack the boxes that are there. Any other ideas? Inboard guys?
