Just loosen the nut that holds the cable to the helm, then turn the wheel to back out the cable (have rags ready to wrap around the greasy cable).

When the cable is no longer engaged, rotate the wheel the proper direction & amount you need to center it. (think ahead on this part!).

Then reinsert the cable, turn the wheel until the nut engages, then tighten nut.

Thanks! I will double check for damage. I don't think the clamp by the rudder slipped. I had loosened it up and still couldn't get it too move, but I didn't try to force it. I tried that because I thought that maybe how you adjusted the steering. If everything checks out I will adjust the cable at the helm.

How do I check that? Is there a diagram on how the rudder comes apart? Does the tank have to come out?

Thanks!

I will try to get some pictures. I didn't notice any obvious damage. The arm on the rudder under the gas tank still points to the starboard side. I thought I saw a post on here that said that was correct(?)and everything seems to steer fine. Could it be something under the dash also? I didn't look there.

Post some pics. If you hit something and now the wheel is off half a turn there's more going on than a simple steering adjustment. Something got tweaked. The rudder, strut, alignment or all the above could have been effected.
When people run down to the lake to see what's making that noise, you've succeeded.

Been Lurking here for a while. Don't post much. But I have a problem with the rudder on my 87 Ski Nautique. I hit something in the lake and now my steering wheel is off about a half turn counter clockwise. Is there a way to adjust it so that it is straight again with the rudder? I tried searching the forum, but didn't find anything on how to adjust it.

Thanks!!
