Yes Dave. The weather models last night all said that we would have 8-12 inches of snow by now. We have 3"

Dave...I heard you guys were getting snow in Mpls today. I am glad you brought this thread back up. I was stopped by Blain's Farm & Fleet (vs. Mill's Fleet Farm). They have Starfire tires (Cooper Tires made in Mexico) for a real good deal. I got a quote for $105/tire at their Thanksgiving sale. So, I plan on getting a new set in a couple of weeks.

Glad to hear your your new MasterCraft's are doing the job for you. Not glad to hear you are getting a major snowstorm this early. And, don't worry. I will be politically correct and won't even bring up global warming.

A update for you Dave,

I don't usually root for an early snow storm, but we got the snow and ice today I have been waiting for since I got the new tires! In the default 4x4 auto mode (all wheel drive) the explorer was fearless, in true 4x4 it was even better. I am very happy with the Mastercraft tires (except for their name ).

We have Mills fleetfarm. I have run them up to 75mph and surprisingly the tires are riding as smooth and quiet as my standard highway tread Micheline's did. I doubt I did my self any mileage favors, but my commute to work is only 3.5 miles each way. I am not anticipating taking any snow days!! I am a little surprised that a tire of the exact same dimensions can so change the look of the vehicle. With the heavy tread it looks like a range rover want-to-be which was not my intention. I did put the raised white lettering facing in so as to not to conspicuously advertise "Mastercraft" on my Correct Craft tow vehicle.

Good price Dave! There are two Fleet & Farm's. One is Blain's F&F, and the other is Mill's F&F. I believe that Mill's carries the MasterCraft tires. The one near me, Blain's, only carries Coopers. Let me know how you like them after you have had them on for awhile.

Davidg

I wound up with the mastercraft courser AXT's for $99 each (235 70 16's) at fleetfarm. Called Friday afternoon and made an appointment for this morning. they look pretty aggressive, but were no louder than the Micheline's they replaced. It does not look as if I will be getting stuck anytime this winter.

Not necessarily you Steve. General stuff like "Goodyears are bad" carries little weight IMO. A tire model (what i meant by tread design) and application would really help others out. That said, I've got Goodyear Wrangler SR-As on the back of my Fleetwood and they've been good in rain and light snow. Wearing well too. There are even several "Wrangler" models to choose from.

Don't get me started on whitewalls!

Ok, my bad.

My wranglers were AT/S's I don't know what the tread design is, it is not on the spec sheet.

The General Grabbers are the HTS's - again no reference to tread design that I can find on the spec sheet.

I've got Wranglers on the back of my Fleetwood and they've been above average for me.

It's quite unfair to make such a blanket statement referencing a Brand only as being good or bad. Please specify the tread design in your complaints or compliments.

Ouch, those Goodyear wranglers were DANGEROUS on my Jeep Liberty's. Hydroplanning like crazy in the rain, and sometimes it was like being on a roulette wheel when on the snow.

I have run the General Grabbers on the Jeeps and the suburban, really like them. Good rain tire, really good in the snow and ice and they really seem to last, regularly giving me 10k to 20k more then what they are rated for. At over 30k miles per year on each vehicle, I go through a lot of tires...

No Dave I put the oem wrangler rts back on them both when they needed them. Back when I had my 91Mustang it came with Goodyears they were 300 a pop, found out the hard way when I cut one. When it was time for new ones,I went with Goodrich,I was very happy with them too.

The Cooper Discoverer is on sale at Blain's (as compared to Mill's) Farm & Fleet for $145. It was a whopping $4 off the regular price. The Mastercraft's may be worth looking into at $124.

coursers

Apparently cooper makes the mastercrafts. Oh shoot, do I want to pull a correct craft with "mastercraft" on my tires????

Gary, did you use the Goodyear Fortera's? Those are the ones I checked out that had the poor reviews. The Ford dealer in Barrington has some pretty good deals on tires as well.

The fleet at my old job ran Mastercraft coursers. I might have to see how they rate, they worked well on my 2 wheel drive van. The guy who did our repair work swore by them. I see fleet farm has my size on sale for $99.

Working for the company I did who went to 1 year oil changes to save money,we never had retreads. Just does not seem like a good idea. Like Alan we have been using Discount. Have replaced the Jeeps Goodyears with the same, and some of the Michelins are made for them and they were good also.

If you get on the mailing list (I don't recommend it) you can find periodic 15% off coupons which i had, brought mine down to around $73 a tire plus shipping, no taxes because it was out of state. It all added up to a deal I cant match locally, but the were remolds, so.... who knows. I am more angry at the service than heart broken over not getting the tires. Anyway...moving on to a new local search.

265/70/17? $125 per tire would have only saved you a few bucks over something like a General Grabber. The firestones I'm running weren't much more and they're highly rated as well. Retreads sound like a bad idea for tires you need to rely on for a daily living but what do I know.

I've found the best deal locally like Alan- local shops will come close to online (tire rack, etc) pricing, then throw in free mount and balance and you end up ahead.

Dave, Luckily they never got around to charging my credit card, I truly think the ordering system was the only part of the company that was aware of my order.

Alan, they were going to be $99/tire delivered to my door, another 25 to have them mounted and balanced locally a good price for the all terrain tread they had. This was definitely going to be an experiment, but due to their poor customer service I will never find out if the tires were any good.

Dave.....did you have to pay for the tires in advance? If so, did they give you a full refund? They sound like the kind of company that would have stiffed you.

Are retreads that much cheaper than new, doesn't seem worth it since you still have to pay to have them shipped, mounted and balanced. I almost always end up at discount tire, free rotation and flat repair for the life of the tires when you buy a set of four. Better yet if you stop in on a Saturday they serve hot dogs while you wait, score!

Well I called the company again today 6 weeks and one day after ordering. they said it should be a week, but they would rally only commit to two. Needless to say the order is cancelled. I also contacted the BBB, for all their good reviews online and in publications, they have a F rating with the BBB in Texas. Maybe I should have done more due diligence

Has anyone ever used these guys out of Texas? They came well recommended by a friend. They make a bead to bead retread tire that they ship to your door, catering to the 4 wheel drive community. Price is certainly right and the four wheel magazines and forums praise them. (I did my due diligence) I decided to give them a shot, their order process was easy enough and I was told to expect a typical 2 week to delivery process. Well two weeks later I had no tires so I called their customer service. They told me they were hampered with a shortage of the right size casings but I would see them in another 1-2 weeks. At the time this vehicle was barely being driven so I let it ride. Well four weeks out.....no tires, they promised me they had the casings and I would se my tires in another 1 to 2 weeks, (obviously this is a canned answer and customer service has no clue what production is doing). I was starting a new job in two weeks and this vehicle would now be a daily commuter, but I decided to give them one more shot rather then restart a tire search. Monday will be 6 weeks and one day, and no indication that there 4-6 day shipping process has begun. Looks like I will have to bail on this and start over locally. My recommendation is stay away from Treadwright.
