A 56 should have never been run on a non detergent.

If it has sludge build up, I'd say so... The detergent might free it up and circulate it. If no sludge, no reason to stick with non-detergent.

Isn't it bad to change over to a detergent oil in an old engine that has always had non detergent?

A non detergent has NEVER been recommended. I and hundreds of my fellow ACBS members have no issues. They created detergent oil for a reason!! |

I am not sure as my buddy that restores the oldies has a 50 gallon drum (think it is Napa) that filled up a 2 gallon can for me.

What brand do you use? I have a friend that has Caviler also, not a 100% sure of the year though, I believe it was in the 60's though. Bradpenn got back with me and need to call the rep back tomorrow about it.

So I am not sure about the Gray Marine 4 but I run non detergent 30 weight in my 4 cyl Hercules (1956 Chris Craft). In my boat the engine oil also serves the transmission and anything with detergent or synthetic will do no favors to the transmission clutches.

I was really thinking I needed to run a little higher Zinc and Phosphorus levels then normal. Just out of curiosity have you ever sent your oil samples to blackstone?
