We finally got around to re-installing the transmission and testing it and we still have problems. I hooked up a pressure gauge to the 3/8" port and there is no pressure until 2500-3000 rpm and then it's only 50-60 psi. It's enough to activate the clutches but no where close to being within specs. According to the Velvet Drive troubleshooting guide it's either a bad pump or a jammed regulator valve. How can I tell if the regulator valve is jammed and how do I fix it? That's the first thing I'll check because I don't have to remove the transmission. |

Before that, use that same port to check your pump pressure and make sure its in spec, else it will slip and warp the plates.
The plates won't warp from fluid temperature alone, but local temperature at the point of slip. |

Yes, You can install a temp sensor in the 3/8 plug that is near the upper fluid line.

Thanks for the tip on parts suppliers in my first post. And I need to make a correction- my son's boat is a Martinique- not a Nautique. All those "iques" confused me.
New questions: I disassembled the transmission and the Forward clutches (the brass plates) are warped and worn. The plates closest to the aft end of the trans are more warped and worn than the forward ones. Is this an obvious sign that the trans has been overheated? The water/oil heat exchanger is not clogged and there is no leakage between the oil and water cores inside the exchanger. Is there a way to add an Oil Temperature sending unit to this transmission so I can add a temp gauge? There is a 3/8" NPT plug in the top of the trans but I don't know if a sending unit is supposed to go there. Has anyone ever drilled and tapped a NPT hole in the sump of these transmissions? Thanks again for your help. |
