We have done it. You go early and get a counter ticket. You can then go through security with them and sit and wait for them to depart. Your parents can do the same thing and be sitting there waiting for them to land.

Our parents often take the kids on trips. What they usually do is fly to the destination a day early in case anything goes wrong. Then they can be there waiting on them.

Mine are now 16 and 13, but they flew from TN to Washington state when they were 14 and 11.

I looked at the services and it looks like it depends on the airline whether you can get it with their ages. Southwest, for example, considers them Young Travelers over age 12 and they do not qualify for the UM program. I found it interesting that there are all kinds of restrictions on the flights, as well.

I flew accors the Atlantic alone several times as a kid. I think my parents made a bigger fuss about it than me at the time.

Also, airlines have UM programs and will help the kids (some charge $$$ for that service)

I'm sure some of you may have dealt with your kids flying somewhere on their own. Any tips or lessons learned?

Our oldest has a chance to work on a ranch this summer where my in-laws live. It also works out for him to fly to where my family is first and the in-laws will get him from there, then fly back from their place.

My parents would like for our youngest to come visit them and we're looking to fly him out for that visit, as well.

The oldest is 15 and we feel he is capable of handling a connecting flight situation, so we are planning to go that route with him.

The youngest is 13 and it looks like we can go the direct flight option with him.
