I hope your dist doesn't have a vaccum advance because if it does you don't have the correct dist and have an automotive version which needs replaced with a marine unit. You need to set the timing around 6-8 btdc then adjust the idle mixture screws then the idle and re-adjust the idle mixture screws again. For a Holley you really should use a vaccum gauge to set the idle mixture so that you have maximum vaccum and the idle is about 700 out of gear and about 600 rpm in gear. if you still have a point style dist you need to up grade to a conversion kit or new electronic dist depending on your budget.

Hi Lew

Down load the following document from Holley web site.
Its not for the exact same carb but the tuning instructions are relevent, section is called idle mixture screws

The document is 199R7948-5.pdf

Also when you are tuning the carb the engine should be at operating temp.
If you can take the boat down to the water it makes life easier.

You need to check you timing as well, no point tunning the carb if the timing is out.

Refer to you engine manual for the timing specification.
( When you check the timing it will be at specific RPM and with the vacum adavced disconnected from the Distributer, make sure that you block the hose so that the carby does suck air. )

You were dead on about the idle mixture adjustment. One was just one turn off the seat and the other was just 3/4 of a turn off the seat.

I turned both an additional turn off the seat It now will run with the butterfly choke open but it needs to be fine tuned. It does not go up in idle but stumbles as I turn it out more. What is best way to fine tune the adjustment. It idles very low now almost will cut off.

Is the fuel pump putting out a reasonable volume of fuel?

I have an older boat that has the 4160 Holley Carb. I just got the carb. back from being completely rebuilt and engine tested. I put the carb on but it will not run unless I hold the Butterfly valve about 3/4 closed.

Any thoughts to the problem? I called the rebuild shop and they assured me that they engine tested it and it ran fine.

Also interested in finding a used carb.
