If you've never seen the backside of the helm control, take a look at the manual that's in the reference section. You'll see there really isn't a spot to spray any lubricant. There's sort of a gearbox and it's greased. Leave the wd40 with your wife to stop the kitchen cabinet doors from squeaking or give it to a "back yard mechanic" neighbor! Dig in and open it up! BTW, there's a complete thread on rebuilding the helm controls. I'll see if I can search it out. Check the FAQ thread.

Thanks Pete. I didn't see that when I searched the sight before. Looks very helpful and I see what you're saying. Doesn't my 99 have a different controller...it doesn't look exactly the same from the pictures? Is that manual close enough to give me an idea on how to take it apart?

That sounds like a dangerous situation. I'd suggest either taking it apart and identify how it can get stuck in gear or replacing the unit entirely.

Hi Everyone,

I have a Morse MV1 controller and I too am having this problem however, mine is a bit different. Mine not only is tough to move from neutral into forward gear but now, mine has locked into position and I cannot get it to move out of gear. I do recall when I had taken it apart, that there is a cam with several fingered peaks & valleys in it that mated to the neutral / engage button. Mine had jumped the cam lobe of one of these and got stuck. I don't know how it happened and now I don't know how to get it unstuck unless removing the entire throttle assembly from the boat. That's 4 hours I'll never get back in my life. Anyone have any thoughts on what has gone wrong inside of my unit and how I can stop it from happening again?

Un-bolt/screw the Morse Control from its mount. Examine the levers on the back-side. You will note spring and the compression mechanism. Mine has grease applied to the mechanism to mitigate friction. I'd start there and see if anything is binding up or corroded.

Is there any need to lube the morse control or cables as it never was this difficult to shift last        year?

It's designed to do that. That is how you shift into forward/reverse without engaging the throttle advance. When sifting into forward, the shift-lever should move from the 12 o'clock position to the 10 o'clock position and ONLY engage the transmission. For shifting into reverse, the shift-lever should move from the 12 o'clock position to the 2 o'clock position and ONLY engage the transmission. After the detente, the "sticky" feeling should go away as you are only moving the throttle cable.

The Morse controls are spring loaded as you shift from neutral to the first détente position (both forward and reverse). Is that what you are referring to?

Sticky throttle/tranny control only about the first 1 1/2" to 2" forward than the rest is a breeze. Any advice on diagnosis or disassembly?
Does adding Perfect Pass effect ease of shifting?
