It's possible with a completely dead battery. Most modern "smart" chargers won't allow it but then again most smart chargers won't bring up a truely dead battery.

Helped a friend with his Merc outboard today. Turns out the battery was charged backwards!
I didn't think it was possible. He must have hooked the charger up, reverse polarity, to the completely dead battery. After we put a good battery in, it took off just fine! |
