Very good...thanks for confirming. Although it is listed as an "ALTDA" part, this one should be it. It notes it has Ford/PCM application, and already has the legs trimmed.
http://bpi.ebasicpower.com/pc/ALTDA-106A/DAMPERS Same unit as ALTDA-106 ( but already trimmed). Looks to be the same unit that DIM carries that I referenced above. Again, many thanks.... |

Know I'm killin this dead horse, but my OCD has kicked in....
I found this old post on the recommended Sachs damper plate with a link to the Mer equipment site for the part, but the link to the part is no longer good....and I don't see any other listing in their parts/product page...any other sources you guys know of, if of course the DIM plate listed as item 1516 (per above post) is not the one? http://www.correctcraftfan.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=17995 |

I found this one on DIM's website....is the 5th item down, item 1516, the Sach's damper plate that folks have had good results with by chance? It is listed on DIM's site as "GM 5.0L/305, 5.7L/350 with Borg Warner Velvet Drive and Hurth 450D/ZF45D transmissions with 26 splines (Manufactured by Sach's).", but sounds like it could be the one:
http://www.skidim.com/Damper-Plates/products/1100/ If so, does it require trimming or any other modification for the Ford 351 & Velet drive 1:1 setup? |

I certainly want to go with the best damper plate, and if it's less expensive, that's a bonus as well. This link is for the PCM damper plate that's been proposed by my local shop:

The circular dampers are junk, Go with the triangular Sachs as recommended. So, who's asking you to bend over and pay the $210???

Unless I'm confused, the PCM damper plate specified for the small block Ford motor (I.e., 351 ci) is typically listed for $190-210 depending on where you source it. This one is a circular 6-bolt plate that requires no trimming. I also see a"universal" 3-bolt triangular shaped plate for about $100 +/- that I understand will fit either GM or Ford small blocks, but requires some trimming of the 3 legs for the Ford application.
Everyone I've talked to before has suggested the PCM part. |

WOW!!! Please tell us where you are getting the 210 figure so someone doesn't make a BIG mistake!! Yes, go with the Sach's damper. It's high quality and not expensive. |

Yes Damper Although, I believe that you would have to trim that one a little. There is one for $100 that is already trimmed. Other's will verify that as I've never replaced one. |

At $90 I certainly would agree, and if it's a continuous wear part with a limited life expectancy, it sounds worthy of replacement "while we're in there" as they say.
But I'm sourcing the part for about $210 before shipping, any my local mechanic is at about $220, but advised it may not be needed. If it's money well spent for preventive considerations and peace of mind, I would be in favor of spending the extra $200...can they really be sourced for under $100? |

I think you would have a hard time convincing most here that replacing a 25 year old wear part like that while the tranny is out isn't a no-brainer. It's only $90.

Got another question guys...appreciate any feedback based on your experiences.
I'm still in the process of having my trans pulled and rebuilt locally, sent out for rebuild (Fantastic Finish Marine) or installing a complete new trans unit on my '86 Martinique with the PCM 351 & 1:1 velvet drive (71C), due to the recent slippage/leakage/overheating event described below.. My boat had a minor trans leak which became severe the last time I had it out recently. I had been keeping an eye on it and topping off the fluid level before each use. However, the leakage got to the point during the last time out that the trans fluid dropped repeatedly during a 2-3 hours outing of intermittent use (ie, pulling kids on tubes, etc.) and I had to top it off 3 times w/ over a quart of fluid in total to limp through the afternoon. During that time, the trans slipped a couple of times when fluid level got low and became difficult to engage in FW gear. The trans also evidently got hot when the fluid level dropped (had steam coming from the fill port when I topped it a couple of times). In talking to a couple of different shops, I'm getting varying recommendations on the need/likelihood of needing to replace the damper/drive plate as well. My boat has been run/used at least a few times per year in recent years, so the drive train has been "exercised" and not allowed to sit up. The boat has 600 hours, and appears all original (I'm essentially the second owner of significant use; first owner purchased and had boat until 2014). The original boat cosmetics/interior are in excellent original condition (hull, floor, interior, etc.) ; I'm told the boat never sat in the weather and came from Iowa where it enjoyed indoor storage during the offseason (keeping the original construction materials from deteriorating). One shop recommends ALLWays replacing the original damper plate on a 25+ yr drive line as a matter of procedure. Another says "inspect" and only replace if it show wear or damage. Also, rebuild pricing with shipping, etc. is coming in only within a few hundred dollars of a brand new unit from DIM (with their 1 time per year 10% discount allowed). I would consider a new unit if I could sell my trans for rebuild core value. Do you know if there is much of a market for a 71C unit needing rebuilding and what core value might be? I'm not in a hugh rush to sell the core unit, but would like to know it's value for budgeting. thanks again (in advance) for any feedback. |
