On my small lake, there are now plenty of mini yachts (I call them) on our lake. The little mustang almost flips over when their waves hit our boat. Still more inboards then anything though .

True. Society has become wimps. You have 1 kid and they think you need to cash the cb comp ski boat and the two-door coup in for a toon and a dork van.

There's a guy on the lake we frequent who has 200 HP outboards mounted on each pontoon. That thing hauls ass. I believe it has the LEDs as well.

When I was a kid, a guy on our lake, a construction contractor, made a "pontoon" boat out of a 10,000 gallon underground fuel storage tank that he cut in half and opened up. He partied hard. Even had a wedding on it once. He would have parties on it and would ask us to put on little shows for his guests.

We are renting a pontoon next week on our annual pilgrimage to NY. A first for us, but with 7 adults and 2 kids it just makes sense. Function over form in this case. I believe it will best serve us well, particularly for bar hopping. ..

All is not lost however, as my bro has his 72 SW and floatplane just down the lake, fulfilling our need for speed (and noise)....

There have been some very fast outdrive dual exhaust pontoons here for quite awhile, stupid fast for an area like here. They do seem to fly much like a bass boat. I'm still waiting to see a 557 outboard here, though at 70k it might be some time. If you guys have not heard of them yet google it,quite an impressive outboard

Our lake was historically mostly tooners. Then there were the fiberglass hull flat deck boats, but now the latest trend is this hideous things, which I suppose for rookies and wallies are the best of all worlds, but what a mess. They are huge, big for our small lake, are generally underpowered, taking a week and a half to plane off and are constantly out pulling tubes, making for huge wakes.

It kills me. We have an old but worsening problem on our lake of "deputy dogs" i.e. concerned citizens patrolling the lake (unofficially, we have an official patrol on weekends, but these folks think they have to help out) So they take pictures of infractions and/or call security to report infractions. The stupid neighborhood association pays attention and sends out letters saying : you may have violated this rule or that rule....." I got one earlier this year.   But even more amusing, I went to our mail room the other day to see a picture of me and my boat (mostly blue dotted out, but you could tell it was me) with a caption that this boat is clearly in violation of the no wake zone policy and that we should all obey the rules. Give me a break. Looks like I was looping around to pick up a skier and inadvertently swung outside the bouys. I guarantee you, my little 16 foot, 1600 lb boat ten feet inside the no wake zone make a heck of a lot smaller wake than one of those barges 10 feet outside the no wake zone. Oh well. I just lay low. I like to fly under the radar and just let these things go.

The modern aluminum tritoons, large elliptical pontoons, or enhanced planeing round tube pontoons all in my experience handle better and are lighter than vast majority of the fiberglass deckboats on the water.

The one I was on was a one off personal boat of the owner of a manufacturer, now in the hands of a local dealer. It had some hull upgrades but was essentially two standard planning outrigger pontoons, with a larger wider center pod, 26 feet- runs low to mid 50s. It doesn't fly out of the hole by skiboat standards but will move between 20 and 50 pretty fast.

All but obsoleting the standard disposable entry level 17ft I/o with 3.0L mercury in my neck of the woods is the 22ft pontoon with 90-115hp 4 stroke. for 23k with a trailer you get a ten person boat that you can teach kids to ski on and spend the day on the lake with a lot more comfort and less gas than the I/o open bow. You lose about 10mph in top speed capability, but not much else.

No kidding, ugh.

250-350hp outboards appear to be the new norm here

LOl I was in the Hurricane this weekend and there was a Pontoon heading for the same canal I was. Being heavy handed I gave it some gas to get there in front of him, he matched me, so I gave it some more, matched me again. Before long I was wide open running 45 mph and blew me away. Don't know what he had in it but it was hooked up to an outdrive with above water dual exhaust.. I think I still out styled him though but that thing could run. Don't think I've ever lost a race to a pontoon before, what's this world coming to?

I wouldn't exactly call it a new fad. Pontoons are the vast majority of boats being sold on my lake at this point, and when everyone is buying one the manufacturers start to differentiate themselves. I was on a tritoon this weekend with a 425hp 498 cu in (basically a python engine) sitting infront of a Volvo duo prop outdrive.   It was a 2008 with Interior and Exterior LED lighting.
