First, I'd like to apologize to the thread owner for hijacking his thread. I was initially trying to add input for lifting the rear seat. It sticks, but will lift up with the right leverage.

Second, I apologize to the members of this forum for getting embroiled in this discussion about 'tubing'. I typically avoid such interactions, and feel embarrased that I did so.

I enjoy this site, and the information and helpfulness of its members when I have questions about my Southwind. Thanks!

Someone please shut this thread down. And how about a permanent moratorium on opposing views on tubing? it always gets ugly.

Chris,
I was NOT trying to be funny but rather very serious. There are many here on site and I am one of them who do not think highly of tubing. Read the thread I linked on getting the kids out on the water. Do them a favor and teach them a sport.

Oh boy...so I should be more like you? Your way is the true boat puller way. All others must listen to you...and it's okay to 'troll' me because I'm a 'newbie' to this site. That's a wee bit presumptuous...and if you contribute that much to this site, you'd think you might have learned when you're being insulting and rude. My 9 year old son and his friends like to get dragged on a tube behind a classic CorrectCraft that I resurrected from the dead, so what?!

Chris,
Thanks for filling us in on your background. You'll find members here with the same as well as common interests.

My opinions regarding tubing revolve around two basics. The first is the disregard for others on the lake who would like some smooth water. Yes, wake boarding and surfing create large wakes as well but unlike tubing, those wakes are typically not from the random directions from the typical tuber. The other, and a big concern of mine is the proven poor safety of the activity. A search reveals the shocking number of injuries and those are only the documented cases.

Stick around, get to know the membership, utilize the fantastic resources of the site and make it to one of the CCfan get together's/reunions.

Btw, I'll tie my ropes off to my rearview mirror if I feel like it. [/QUOTE]

If this last part is directed at me, I was only thinking of safety, not to rag on you.
My tube came with a rope, and its much heavier than a regular one.

Where to start with telling you what I know about your 'sport' that I should be teaching my kids...I grew up on the St. Lawrence River in NY and my father taught me how to handle a boat by myself by the time I was 6. I lived with my brother in Orlando while attending college. My brother was friends with Tony Finn when he lived in CA. Tony Finn is credited with inventing 'wakeboarding' which was marketed then under the name 'Skurfer', and my brother helped him take the sport national. I actually rode many of the prototype shapes for 'Skurfer' when I lived in Orlando. Now I know you're not going to like this, but I was also a 'test pilot' for Bump-R-Ride tubes conducting R&D on various materials for manufacturing when 'tubing' was just emerging as a marketable activity. I was a driver and rider in photoshoots in FL for Bump-R-Ride, and appeared in many of the ski magazines. I'm no newb. I've been getting pulled behind boats on skis, wakeboards, tubes, and barefoot for many many years.

I have elitist bungholes on my lake too that act like they own the water and have the right to opine on what people do and how they use their boats. My opinion is anything pulled behind a boat is a 'toy', so don't take yourself too seriously Pete. If people want to enjoy themselves doing what ever makes them happy, so be it. Leave them alone.

Btw, I'll tie my ropes off to my rearview mirror if I feel like it.

I know many people have legitimate problems with tubers, but guess I'm lucky, I typically only see them going in a fairly straight line behind pontoons, so I could care less about them.

Agreed. Wake surfers are a menace, usually plowing down the lake like they own it.

Is that just one regular length of rope tied from one tube to the other that slips through the ring? If so, I would at least use proper ski ropes.
Tubing has its place imo. I would rather see a kid on a tube, than a wake surfer plowing up the lake....

Al,
Thanks for pointing out the rope problem. I didn't even notice since I was so fixated on the poor kids getting their brains beat out. Enough said since I did such a good job of highjacking this thread!

Aw C'mon Pete, don't beat around the bush, tell us how you really feel.....

Chris: don't mind him. When he was just a wee lad, he was once set adrift in a tube and lost at sea. Despite years of therapy, can't seem to shake his recurrant nightmares.

X2! The back seat pulls up. But you'll need to lift the floor to get total access to the mufflers unless you have a cut out that allows decent access by the transom.

I have a '78 Southwind 20. I agree with you! I love this boat! I brought her back to life after sitting for years in my driveway. I love bringing the kids tubing off of her. I can't agree with you more about the sound and the the way they ride...classic!

Wait a minute....when you were talking about someday blowing the motor I thought you were talking about the original. How old is the Jasper?

Oh, Re powered. I thought since the rest of it was original the engine was too. I was just curious, nobody ever talks about thermos on the site, so I was guessing since same model and year yours had one too. PO put the edelbrocks on, not sure what else may have been done at the time, but I'd guess it wasn't just for looks.....

About the tag, I think I know what you are talking about perhaps. There is one that was saved from the old engine when it was repowered. It has a Jasper marine 350 now, so I assume you are talking about the original engine that your boat has? Love those elder brock valve covers! Old school

I've been to CME in Johnston, impressive shop.

So....curious, ..is it a Thermo-Electron like mine? If it's unmolested there should be a little metal ID tag attached.

Only photos I could find are from Manifold Repair Day back in 2011. No tag visible in photos so of little value, but thought I'd post 'em anyway
