I believe the rudder is 1/4 and the shaft is 3/16. You will need about 9"., West Marine.com has it online. I agree on the hard steering possibly being the cable. Disconnect the rudder and see if it turns easily, if it does you need to replace the cable. . Also some people actually have grease fittings on the rudder nut.

Not sure, but you can use a drill bit as a gage between shaft & gland to check    it will either be 3/16 or 1/4 inch.

Thanks for the input guys, ill do some googling and see what I can find.

Any one have an idea of the correct packing for an SN2001 ('83 model), I'll have a look in the manual in the meantime hopefully it has the info.

Graeme,
Where have you been looking? Gore is a world wide company so see if you can find an industrial distributor that handles their GFO packing. Over here, I get 50' rolls from McMaster Carr. They have smaller lengths too plus, lots cheaper than the "marine" supplies or marinas.

If it isn't leaking, then the packing can be reused.   A light coating of grease (on the entire shaft) will help with friction, but it doesn't last very long.    Use a waterproof grease.

I did same thing, BTW.

If you have stiff steering, could be the cable too.

Hello again, as I am still very green when it comes to working on inboard boats,

I have a question regarding the rudder.

I want to re-grease the rudder, as I don;t think it has had much love lately. Will I need to get more rudder packing or can I reuse what is there should be be "okay"

I have been struggling to find packing this side of the world, but with a stiff steering I thought I should check the rubber lubrication.in the meantime. I have finally gotten the clearances so I was planning to head out for my maydon voyage on my Nautique this weekend.

I am sorry if this is covered somewhere but I tried numerous searches to find more info on this, but came up short,
