If your boat is setup the same as my 99 Super Sport then you should be able to confirm your check engine light is working by turning the key to Run but not starting the boat. I confirmed that is how mine works the other day. If that doesn't work for yours then I am not sure if it is activated by 12 volts or ground but I would guess 12 volts.

I'm replacing various odds and ends on the boat and just replaced the old check engine light because the red lens was missing. Then I wondered how do I "check" the check engine light to see if its actually working (from the senders) ? Do I put ground or 12v to the temp and oil sender wires and see if the red light comes on? I don't just want to assume it's working.
Thanks
