I think you should just temporarily put the handle back on and move the throttle to neutral detent. Then take the lever off and install it vertically.

Had to reinstall throttle handle after it loosened up. How do I index it correctly to insure that full throttle is available in forward position? Thanks for any information. 98 sport with GT-40A.
