James,
Welcome to CCfan.
From your description, it sounds like you have two issues. On the no crank (turn over), check the condition of your battery, the cables and the terminals. Have the battery load tested and make sure it's a starting battery and not a deep cycle. With the rough running, it could be ignition or fuel. Did the exhaust smell that it was running rich? The carb could be dumping too much fuel indicating a stuck float. When you shut down the engine, look down the throat of the carb and look for dripping fuel. You mention an "electric" ignition. Some EI conversions do fail. When you dig into the engine, give us some more information as you go.

Hello everyone.

I just purchased a 1986 CC Ski Nautique 2001 with a Ford 351 Windsor, its a beauty. Cranked right up and idled around the cove for 20-30 minutes. Eventually pushed it up to 15-2500RPM and it ran great. Idled into the marina and the idle started getting off balance, RUM-rum-RUM-rum and sputtered off. When I tried to restart, the ignition and gauges turned on but it did not turn over. Waited a minute and tried again, nothing. A few minutes later tried turning ignition and it fired up with a little throttle coaxing. It would barely stay cranked in neutral but will start sputtering when trying to go over 1500RPM.

Could anyone give me a place to start when diagnosing this problem?

It has an electric ignition, motor only has 20-30 hours on it. Carb rebuilt with the previous engine block replacement.
