Sorry, Peter, I could have been clearer in my post! The advice here is great and I've read a lot of very helpful posts. Actually bought my '89 after reading here that it was possible to repair an Invertaflo muffler...

I meant that if a prior owner has made a lot of undocumented modifications it is harder to figure out what the correct replacement parts should be, especially if the part is old and part numbers are faded. You can't just go to Skidim and order based on make and model.

Diagnosing any issues related to those mods gets complicated unless you know exactly what has been changed and can explain it to the really great members here who are trying to help. Can you imagine the post when he asks why the doghouse exploded? How many replies would it take before members figured out someone had glassed over the vents? Yikes!

I didn't mean that good advice is hard to come by, it just takes a lot longer to work through the unknowns to get to it.

I just really felt for this guy trying to get an affordable boat that he could work on. Maybe saw enough of myself to prompt my first post. His life will be easier working on something that's original because it will be easier to order parts and helping him will be more straightforward.

He came to the right place for advice, and I'm hoping I helped a little. Apologies if it came out wrong!

Walk away. There are too many obvious issues with the boat and you must assume at least a few unidentified issues.
1. If you're willing to work on a fixer-upper, you're better off with something that's all original but old. Getting parts will be easier, getting advice will be easier.
2. Spending $3k on a sound original boat leaves room to drop a few grand for a $5k to $6k value boat. $1k for a hacked up boat with prior owner mods could easily cost more than it's worth.
3. You didn't say what you wanted the boat for, but it's probably for a low cost, fun boat or a restoration project. Either way, getting an all original boat will be easier.

I suggest you let this one go. With the boating season here, finding a good deal gets harder. Best to wait until fall or winter....

Sounds like you have already made up your mind.   
Do you have the skills to put this boat back into shape?
Will she take care of the paper work to assure that you can get title work done?

Figure on having $5K in boat by the time it is done. (or more) that's with you doing the work.

She better jump on your price as she will have a hard time finding a buyer for more $$.

$5K estimate is assuming the engine is good.
Keep it as original as YOU want it

The boat may have been stolen.

I connected the dots after a few posts, and then realized it was also missing all of the grab rails and cleats too.

She was asking $3000, I offered her $1000 and brought up a lot of the issues especially the weird DMV situation. She commented that she would need more than that but never said no. I told her to sit on it and get back to me. For $1000, o feel it would be a good deal and a fun project. Not too much to break the bank and good enough for 1 season.

Oh and no prior pictures.

We are referring to the bilge ventilation exhaust and NOT the engine/cooling water exhaust.

That's exactly what somebody did! Look closely at the picture of the stern and you can see the vent hole plugged, painted over and a half arse job at that.

Regarding the aft deck vents and the non original hull graphics, I'd say there's a chance the vents were removed/filled in and then the hull and deck were painted.

Oomph, oldie. But, it will still work if I get it cheap cheap - Interesting the title shows the HIN completely incorrect, CT8 instead of CTC, and it shows 1989, instead of 1978. I bet the DMV person was having a hard time and just said screw it and typed in whatever the owner said it was.

That, from what I am reading, is a really easy fix, way easier than in a car, tranny being on a platform, rather than in the air. Simple!

How does the stingers/floor look? I guess you can't really tell?

Strange***no rear bilge blower vents. Was that normal??
Non factory floors,   may have had a stringer job in it's past.

Everything I am looking up is saying this should only be 12 characters long? Also the title shows 1989 CC. But from those pictures, it is definitely a mustang. The windscreen, dash, seating all match.

My 1978 Mustang ends in     M78G
1979 Mustangs had teak strips in front of the front scoop, 1978 did not

Here's the Mustang 17 from the 79 brochure. Someone has given the one you are looking at a graphics makeover.



I agree with others that it would take some work to get that stang water ready but doable. The noise you hear at the trans may be a bad damper plate. It connects the engine to the trans. Not a bad DIY replacement or that expensive. A very close inspection of the stringer replacement is needed. We have seen some pretty bad hack jobs and even from so called pros!! Engine mount bolts spinning in the stringers are one way of checking stringers but, very localized. If you are interested in the boat, get us some more pictures.

You could just barely make out what looked like Nautique or Ski on the back of the boat. I figured I didn't really need to post about it and I should walk away, but that is tough to do, hah. Stubborn old goat.

Definitely not an '89. Maybe 79. How about pictures of the whole boat?

If it needs a bunch of work, it will be a money pit.    You might be better off getting one that runs well at the sale.

All,

I am finally looking at purchasing a boat and just looked at a Nautique that is supposedly a 1989. The dash is totally different, but that could have been changed I suppose.

The floor/runners were supposedly redone about 9 years ago, and they look good and feel great, I checked the engine mount bolts and they snug really nice, nothing seems to continue to spin in the wood. The engine is a 302 Ford, it has a little trouble starting and the fluid doesn't really squirt that well from the venturi, but it probably needs a rebuild, no biggie. My problem is the transmission is making one hell of a racket when you put it in gear on land. Now I did read that 1, you shouldn't do that and 2, if you do it will probably sound like marbles because it needs a little load. Will it, the sound, feel like it is coming from the transmission?

I have no issues with rebuilding it myself, just want to get a good lay of the land before I offer them something. **Truthfully, I am looking for a new project, I just want to get something out of it.
