If your ring gear teeth are damaged, then things get a little more involved.
You'll have to remove the transmission, the bellhousing and the flywheel and then remove the old ring gear and replace it with a new one. It takes a specific ring gear, not just any 351 ring gear but we'll let you look at things first and hope it's just the starter giving you issues

Kyle, There wouldn't be any damage to the engine itself but what Ken mentioned is to check the ring gear
The ring gear is what the gear on the starter engages. It's a large gear mounted on the outside of the flywheel. You will be able to see it through the starter hole when you have the starter removed. |

Thanks! Any chance the engine could be damaged at all, if the starter teeth are?; I assume there is some kind of flywheel that catches the starter teeth.
For the cost of a new starter I might as well replace the unit if I'm taking it off. |

ARCO 70200 is what you want.
Good research. Easy to change I'd disconnect the negative battery cable before starting the job just to prevent any accidental arcs then you have 2 wires to the starter, 2 bolts holding it to the bellhousing and a few contortionist maneuvers using a ratchet with a long extension or a couple of extensions hooked together to take one out and put the other in. No shims or anything like that to worry about. You might just want to pull the starter and look at the teeth on the starter and the flywheel for any signs of damage or take the starter to an auto electric shop and have it checked out. You could also look for corrosion on the pinion shaft that just needs to be cleaned off or something easy like that |

Dialing in my new to me SN 196, put a new battery in it as the one which came with the boat was old and previous owner said it was prone to dying.
Boat fired right up with a new battery but the starter when engaging makes a grinding sound. Seemed to get a little better as the weekend wore on (boat hasn't been used more than a few times in the last few years). Other than the sound it seems to start the boat fine. At any rate, before I go buy a new starter - any idea what this sound could be caused by? Also can anyone confirm the correct starter for this boat? From my research the boat is standard LH rotation but requires a reduction drive cw marine starter. Alco 70200 was reference. How hard are the units to replace and is there anything I should know. Doesn't appear to be anything in the service manual. TIA Kyle |
