Nah there is no steel in this thing. Actually I cut it in half just for the heck of it (hard to take a good picture with this phone) and it's not 100% the same material as what I just put in, but it's not steel.

I could figure out the differences if I really felt like it, which would actually be kinda cool. But I'm not sure what brand is in the motor, and the machine shop is a month behind in work so I don't want to bother them asking what they are.

Aaron,
Is the plug (whatever you want to call it!) on the right the one that popped and the one on the left the new one? Check the one on the right with a magnet. It looks like a steel plug with a gold zinc chromate platting? If it is steel, then you certainly have another reason to complain to that shop!!

They may very well be casting plugs but I called on some of the largest Engine Rebuilders in the nation and they called them Freeze Plugs. Parts stores use the same Freeze Plug Term. Kind of like needing a tissue and asking for a Kleenex.. Everyone understands the popular term.

If it popped out, you'd expect it to go in easy.

The new one will probably go in harder than the used one that you tapped back in.

Brand new brass casting plug right behind the motor mount popped out at WOT, caught it right away so nothing over heated.

I have a brand new set of brass plugs coming in tomorrow, I'm a little concerned because the thing was so easy to tap back in on the water compared to steel ones I've used in the past. I've heard to use either copper silicone or Permatex Avaition form-a-gasket when putting it back in. I plan on cleaning up the area the plug sits in before the new brass plug goes in, wondering if anybody else has any other suggestions on sealant for a marine engine, otherwise the copper silicone is probably the way I'll go (the permatex stuff doesn't seem to be rated very high temperature wise).
