William....stop!!
Step back off the ledge....never let an inanimate object defeat you. You've come so far, you've learned a lot, made some CCF buddies, and.... Let's fix this thing!!

I think you may need an intervention or something.
An inch can be pretty long sometimes PS...............Wayoutthere was close to throwing in the towel a few times but he made it through. He'll lead the intervention,.................... pull up a comfy couch

I'm one inch from tossing this project into the bin. I opened this site today to say that I'm putting the boat on Craigslist for $1000 with the hopes of getting something for the engine. The bottom end is brand new. Or, just calling KDFC and having them just come pick it up.

It is usually June before we get warm water in No Cal. Sounds like a fun meet up. I will try and make it.

No, no, no...
We're waiting for William! After he fuels up, and after a couple nice warm weekends, he'll be back under the hood... And it neither has to take place in May, nor Lake Sonoma. One thing about the Delta-always water! And, it may help draw others from NorCal...happy to discuss plans off-thread... |

I've put the boat on hold. I'm doing some construction inside my cabin and yard work atm. Also, I need to build up some mental bandwidth to handle pulling the trans out and rebuilding it. Appreciate everyone here.

I think there are enough NorCal Nautiques to have a meet-up, maybe over in the Delta, say B&W in Rio Vista?
Sometime in May? If so, we should start a thread so as to let William continue his quest here... I had hoped he would have just installed the 'new' trans as was-it was working/running properly in 3+ years ago. I've never had one apart, so I'm no good to him there.... |

Ski Nat, haha! No need to go fund me LOL! I'll deal. Funny guys, you, Clearlake is just high enough to keep a couple ramps open as yet, but who knows how long it will last...

It sounds like your forward clutches are locked, but how you had that happen just installing it and running it with no load is a mystery. Maybe tryathlete will start a "get William a transmission fund"

Well, I changed the pump back to the one that came with the 'new' transmission and now it's doing the cutest thing. When i shift into reverse, the dipstick pops out. I still have forward in all three shift positions. I tried to turn the input shaft while holding the output when I had if off of the engine and they are locked together. I reinstalled the transmission anyway because I thought maybe with the restoration of fluid pressure it might shift out of drive when I selected the other positions. So, dunno what I did but I did something to it when I installed it initially because it rotated freely before I installed it. That said, the engine is running great. I wanted this kind of boat because I love how they sound running in the water, that glug glug glug of the water mixed with the exhaust gas leaving the boat at idle. I get that sound kinda in the yard with the fake lake. I sat there for a while with the engine running and the fake lake and enjoyed that sound. Maybe this is the best I'll get out of this boat. I can see myself on Saturday afternoons sitting in the yard with the hose hooked up and the engine running. Or, I can rebuild this transmission and try again.

I think the quick summary is......
He gave M/W a haircut, it was a good one M/W gave him a transmission that worked William put the new pump he had on the transmission and he might have put his new regulator/shift valve in it too since both parts were new He then installed it and had the issues mentioned above As part of his troubleshooting, he pulled the plug from the reverse test port (at the top of the forward &reverse adapter) and barely got any flow out when in reverse. He put it back in, didn't do anything with the main line pressure port plug mentioned by roadtrip Some of this was from the thread, some from a phone call the other day.

Good point, however, I don't think any of the fitting/plugs were fooled with since it came out of the '81.

There are two 3/8" NPT holes on the top, rear of the case. One gets a 3/8" plug, the other has a line to the trans cooler. 50/50 chance to get them reversed. And if they are reversed there is very little pressure to the shift valve.

Hey, I remember that "81 on a diet".
Talked with William today and it seems like he may have some flow/pressure issues, well not him but the transmission He mentions up above that when he pulled the plug from the Reverse test port and put it in reverse, he got some flow, but very little, just kinda burbling out. I tried the same thing on a transmission with a hose and container to catch the fluid after that and could have emptied the fluid out pretty quickly at about 800 RPM. It'll be a couple of weeks till he gets to this again, but he's gonna swap the pump from Mourning Wood back on and see what that does for him,

Hey now, I got that trans from the bottom of Tahoe. It is fresh water...
Actually, it came from a running, working '81 Nautique (RH) that I had in 2018. ...and as for me? well, it will grow back. Ha! Best haircut I've had in years!! |

Well William...........after giving it a little thought, I think that assuming you gave MourningWood a good haircut and he gave you a good transmission in return ,the sorta, maybe, almost logical thing to do would be to put his pump back on the transmission and try it out. .
Your new pump seems to be the only common part between these 2 transmissions that have had what seem like the same symptoms. You should have flow to the cooler as long as the pump is turning, and it's turning whether you're in Forward Neutral or Reverse as long as the engine is running. It's not all locked up internally since you can turn the shafts as you described above, but trying to figure out your problem is a head scratcher. That's my illogical logic for right now..........to put the original pump back on and start fresh.

My pump has the checked knoblike casting but does not have the X'd linear casting though. Not sure if that matters in terms of having the correct pump or not.

Thank you Spotrep. It's only been 5 years that I've been trying to get this wonderful boat in the water permanently. I could have had a degree in nuclear discumbobulation by now. And Ha! KENO, yep, that looks like the same orientation that I have. And I could hold the input and rotate the flange with a small amount of tension.

You'll have to rotate the picture 90 degrees, but I'll agree with Spotrep that it's right. If the pump was on wrong, you'd have no pump pressure at all, so since you have pressure it has to be on right, like in the picture. Back when you said it rotated by hand before you installed it, could you hold the input shaft in one hand, the output flange in the other and rotate the output without the input turning or vice versa? Or did they turn like they were locked together Did M/Wood say it worked? You have a PM by the way. It might be the phone number for a good exorcist. |
