My 95 and my older 78 Nautique have the traditional drain hose and it works well with warm oil.
We had a 87 Malibu with the Chev 350 and it was mounted very low to the bottom and the oil drain bolt could not be removed without taking the bolts out of the motor mount and lifting the engine an inch. That was a PIA so I bought the oil pump to suck oil out of the pan using the 1/4 inch hose. Worked fine but I always hated it. Mine was powered by a 1/4 inch drill. I always felt this method leaves a little of the dirty oil still in the pan bottom but like your boat I had no choice. You can always waste a quart of clean oil and pour it in the top after the first drain and pull it out after it drains all the way down to see if it comes out clean or soiled. |

I, too, use and like the MityVac. although I get more oil out than 3 its. The tube goes down to the very bottom.. Very handy for transmissions too. I use it for my cars, m/cycle, etc. It can also be a fluid pump when needed. Very handy. |

Bill I believe that what Tim believes is right and the SkiDim kit for older Fords will work Chrysler used 1/2-20 till the late 80's at least on their V-8's and I doubt that their marine/industrial engines used anything different. With a little shopping you'll probably find a 1/2-20 kit for quite a bit less than what SkiDim charges. |

Here's a catalog page that should really do pretty much nothing to clear up any confusion about dipsticks and oils pans for PCM 351w engines. I don't think it's a complete list
Different pans from before 1986,and after 1986 different dipsticks depending on mounting angle and whether or not the engine had a drain kit. That would be 1997 as mentioned earlier by TRB. At least it tells you the part number that should be on your dipstick for each application |

Every single 351 I've done an oil change on shows 5qt perfectly on the dipstick with the filter full. (if the dip stick is correct). Regardless of what is correct, he is missing 1/2-1 quart in that engine.
I measure oil level with the boat floating in the water usually or try and mimic floating angle on the trailer. I have a 351 pulled apart currently. I could measure the length of the dipstick relative to the marks. |

Pete, I will try and lower bow down next time to get add'l old oil extracted, I change in my garage on level surface and try to ensure boat is level too....
Zach, thanks for the info, hopefully I haven't been running with too little oil, but I do double check each time prior to starting (oil is generally pretty dang clean)....I'll investigate more and double check everything, I'll cautiously add add'l oil (if needed) next time I start it up |

Maybe that guy who did the oil pan capacity test should do one with oil removal. Maybe when it gets warmer??
I do know that "PCM" 351 pans, which are really a Ford provided pan are the same from the late 80's up. I just found one on Craigslist back home that was a new take off from a crate engine. Same exact pan except for a built in windage tray--- 20 bucks, 3 miles from the house. |

Keep in mind the angle of the engine does make a difference. I've always gotten almost 4 qts, out of my 302 but I lower the bow slightly. Then after a filter change, I'll get about 4 and 1/2 quarts back in. Zach, Try pouring a full quart of oil into a oil filter. It doesn't all fit! |

4 quart pan roughly 1 in the filter. Pretty standard across the board for factory small blocks from the big 3 mfgs.
Your dipstick is probably wrong (have seen it plenty). May have something to do with a threaded style dipstick too? not sure where that style enters the pan. |

Oil pan capacity on GT-40 is 4 qts according to manual. Is this different than total oil in engine, 4 qts in pan, plus oil in filter?

Yeah, 351 from the beginning of time is 5qt capacity. There is 1 dirty quart of oil remaining in your pan.

You're missing 1 quart somewhere.
Tube Fitting This is the universal that can be had in different barb sizes. Also, probably can source at home improvement store if needed. |

I use a Mityvac 7201 on my '97 GT-40. I warm up the engine 5-10 min then place tube into dipstick hole and pump 10 times. It extracts very well, removing ~3 qts. The other ~ 1 qt is located in the oil filter.
For the transmission fluid, I use a pump from an old large head and shoulders bottle, fits perfectly in dipstick hole to extract trans fluid and it takes care of dry scalp. It takes approximately 80 pumps to extract 2 qts of trans fluid. It takes longer to warm the engine up than it does to extract the oil. Length of time is approximately 2 beers to change oil and clean up. |

Summit says the LA had a 1/2-20 plug... which I believe is the same size as the older ford/gm kit that SkiDIM sells. |

Bingo, threaded dipstick tubes go all the way to the bottom of the pan and are designed to suck oil out like a straw rather than inserting a standalone tube into the outer tube.
West marine makes a fitting you can screw on that goes to a barb so you can stick it in any hose that's the correct size if you already have an extractor. We did this a lot at the boat store on boats that were optioned with that tube. Seemed to be a 97-98-99 time frame. |

The reason the 97 doesn’t have a hose is because they lowered the engine in the hull that year... clearance is very tight. I don’t think you’ll be able to install a hose while the engine is in place. Even getting the drain plug off would be a PITA.
A good oil extractor will come with a 1/4” (od) hose that will fit down the dipstick. Warm oil is much easier to pull out than cold. |

You'd have to figure they threaded the top for a reason, like sucking the oil out that way. Why not suck the oil out and see how much you get out of it then you'll know for sure |

Draining in the bilge?? Sounds messy to say the least! I've never had a problem sucking oil via any dip stick hole and that includes my Escort. I've used vacuum oil extractors on hundreds of boats with many different engines way before anyone came up with the idea of putting a drain hose on a oil pan. Are you using the correct size tubing? |

PIA. My ‘76 Escort doesn’t have a drain hose and once I’ve tried sucking oil out the dipsticktube. Best I could get was maybe a quart. Does the GT40 have an actual drain plug in the pan? My Escort does so I take garbage bags and lay them in bilge, tape them everywhich way then I slowly pull the oil drain plug and let oil fill the lined bilge and then I suck it out the liner.

My '96 with a GT40 has a drain hose at the bottom of the oil pan. A friend has a '97 with a GT40 but no drain hose. It has a threaded fitting on the top of the dip stick although I don't know what it would thread to (it looks like a garden hose thread but larger diameter).
I need to know if the bottom of the dipstick goes to the bottom of the pan or not? If it does, I can suck it out just using the dipstick tube. If it doesn't, then I'd have to snake a hose down the dipstick and hope it bottoms out. Suggestions? I'm trying to help my friend out and said I'd change his oil and tranny fluid because I have a GT40. But suddenly I don't know how to get it out (all of it). Thanks in advance, Gordon |
