I have a boom that came with the boat. I never checked but can it be used vertical instead of horizontal?

While it's there, maybe they can get the ring/finger off the pylon? BTW, why are you removing it? Extended pylon? If so, have you considered the super deluxe boom mount in the CCfan store?? (scroll down to the bottom)

Check your wires on the back of the key switch. The previous owner of our boat didn't attach them good and I had a similar situation from a wire that came lose and was hitting another wire. Put it back the way it was supposed to be and has ran great ever sense. It's worth a look.

Do you mean that the engine stayed running normally after you turned it off?

If that's the case you have more of a problem than the starter solenoid.

If it quit running but kept on cranking then like Pete said, the solenoid is your issue

The solenoid sends power to the starter when the key is in START. It has nothing to do with power to the ignition side of things.

You may have welded contacts but you have another issue too if it stayed running normally with the key OFF and the kill switch pulled too.

Ignition power to the coil comes from the key in the START or RUN position, Another way to get power to the coil is with a bad alternator backfeeding through the green/yellow excitation wire shown in the diagram. If you have this backfeed situation you can have the key in your pocket and the boat will stay running

Your start relay (some call it a "solenoid")contacts are welded together. Get the VOM out and with the battery disconnected, get an Ohm reading across the two large posts. If good, you will get an infinity reading. If not, then you will get a near zero Ohm reading. The welding of the contacts is caused by a low voltage high amp condition. You may have a bad battery, bad battery cables, bad battery terminal connections and even caused by a deep cycle battery rather than a start battery.

1986 2001 comp ski boat. Took the boat our today for a spin.around the lake. Ran fantastic. Got back to the dock. Went to turn key off. Did not shut off. Pushed kill switch. Would not shut off. Had to disconnect battery. If I reconnect battery, it tries to start. but starter does not stop. Help
