Don, Don't forget that a marine trans isn't a automatic in a car. They aren't the same. |

Hey Pete. I saw Dextron 6 as the normal evolution of the Dextron products so I thought it was worth asking about. After writing that post I went out to the garage and remembered that I had about 10 quarts of D-3, half Chevron and half Napa.
I know what I’ll be using now :-) I heard a while back that Synthetic Trans fluid was too slippery for the clutch packs. I also have a hard time believing that the manufacturers wouldn’t design something they couldn’t sell to mostly everybody. But the article I read said that D6 was only for GM transmissions in GM cars. FWIW |

Contrary to some, I have been using full synthetic ATF for five (5) years now. No problems. I'm a Royal Purple fan, so I run Royal Purple Max ATF. No issues so far and I don't anticipate any problems due to fluid type. Your mileage may vary. DISCLAIMER. Don't use anything but what is outlined in your CC Owners Manual JQ |

Thanks, will check idle speed next week when at the lake, if it's the flex plate i'll probably put up wit it until end of season.

Dave,
What RPM is you idle at? When it's too low, the planetary reverse gear set can rattle due to engine harmonics. In gear, the idle should be 650 to 700 RPM. The other rattle can be caused by the damper plate on the flywheel when the springs get some age on them. |

Hey while your on gearbox I have a metallic rattle in my 1.23 to 1 1997 196, only when skier asks for in gear, then disappears when I pull away, otherwise box is running good.
Any ideas. Cheers Dave. |

Don,
Why do you want to go with the Dex 6? Understand that lubricity differences affect the coefficient of friction that can effect the clutch packs. |

I read a series of comments in a post back in 2011 and the consensus was to use Dextron 3 in the PCM 40A 1.23:1 transmission. Is anybody now using the full synthetic Dextron 6?
There seems to be a question if the Dextron 6 can be used in non GM transmissions I thought about flushing with the cheaper Dextron 3 and then filling it with Dextron 6. if it was suitable Boat is my 96- 176 351W Thanks Don |
