Jim,
The black wire should be the ground. It should originate on the engine block and then also go to the fuel tank for it's grounding. The tan wire will be the positive source from the dash switch. The all around aft light should turn on with the bow nav lights but also by itself as an "at anchor" light. Power for both is via the tan wire so take a look at how it's wired on the dash switch.

Hello,
New to forum.

Have purchased a nice 1980 Ski nautique. only took 38 years.
I am working on the stern light. have black and tan wire at the base.
When I turn on the running lights, no stern light. When I hit the swith the other way, to just the stern light, it gets power. Should just be one tan wire running back?
have power at the switch base on both sides.

Any one had this problem? I am checking the wire run, but could it be something else I am missing
