Those Nazi Road Oilers leaked so much oil you didn’t need a filter. |

But Ross, a Wisconsin engine isn't made by PCM!! FYI, Wisconsin does recommend multi weight oils per the manual. |

Gary, The old 36 hp VW barely had enough oil anyway. Did not have to worry about orange filters cause they did not have a place to put it

Air cooled VW's and Porsche's always specified straight weights back in the day too. The average person didn't realize in addition to air cooling they were also oil cooled. The word back then was under extreme heat that the multi weight would break down back to it's base weight. Our Farmall tractor,if it got too cold out it would refuse to start with 10-30. Straight 10 it was fine. Oil has come a long way in 40 years, back a few years ago when I was crazy enough to put up with cold weather I found out that 10-30 was now ok. Today I don't care- it was 89

1000 hp? I am assuming that was per cylinder. At least that is what our motor made. Actually more like 1250 per hole.
I'll let you and Pete haggle this one out.. ![]() ![]() |

I only use oil from the back of a KFC to make 1000 hp . I don"t need viscosity and heat range links thanks. i know what multi weight oils are why PCM didn't use them back then i guess they just weren't rated right for application.

Ross, I highly recommend you do some reading about multi weight oils. Your statement tells me you don't know what the 20-50 means. FYI, the 20 is the base weight of the oil so a 20-50 acts like a straight 20 when it's cold. Then, when hot it acts like a 50 weight. Doesn't Amsoil have a FAQ section on their web site? Also, how familiar are you with a Wisconsin S-14d? BTW, I don't ice fish!! |

Man sounds like you need more like 20w for that ice fishing. 20w50 probably barely turnover and sludge up!

No liquid water for a few more months but I did break into the VR1. My 69 Bolens with the 12 HP Wisconsin single was due for a change and I figured I'd start running the 20-50 in it since I used my last quart of 30 a couple months ago. I had been running this high tech straight 30: ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Bought it all apart. It was covered but not painted. No panel or interior when I got it. Basically rebuilt all of it. All leather interior and glass panel. Lots of Titanium pieces fabricated and carbon fibre. Have seen 200 mph level at 3000 ft. Climbs pretty easy at over 2000+ ft/min.
21 gallon tank is only down side. But after 2 hours you want out to stretch anyway. Very agile fun airplane.. ![]() |

I guess it would be interesting to note delta T. Back in the late 70’s when I was at U if I aviation institute we were trying to get FAA approval for extending oil change intervals on training aircraft, since we hit 100 hour standard oil change times every few weeks on basic training aircraft. We ran Phillips 30 straight viscosity against the Ester-based Mobil One formulation and ran cyclic power/cooling to simulate lots of touch and go landings and ran the engines to 2000 hours. I wish I had access to the tear down photos. Measuring the Dino oil engine showed some pretty significant wear that would clearly require overhaul. The synthetic oil engine measured very close to a zero-time engine. I wasn’t there to find out if U if I got permission to extend drain intervals but I sure did start using synthetic oil on all of my engines large and small. I wish Mobil still made the gas to liquids formula—rumor that they do for some Euro-spec applications but don’t have any inside knowledge. I think Amsoil and others make gtl synthetics.
