Barefoot Nautique Diesel powered

It seems the gearbox does not like the diesel torque! After a few hours without problems the gearbox starts to slip at Maxium acceleration. Still can reach 67 km still can acceleratie good but not full throttle.

I,m running this speed with only 4150 rpm so that is good we have 200 rpm left.
So one or 2 extra mph must be possible with a bit extra boost

The setup works great! i have seen an other one in a m*stercraft
with large reduction gearbox and a big prop but that did not move so good.
Always nice to do a little expriment!

Good work Ben.. as for posting i phone footage would like to know how to as well, along with pictures on wrong way up … all I can think of see if you can upload to YouTube then post a link to it.

I figured if you hadn't seen it, it would be a good look at what he had for issues and give you an idea of what he did as far as prop experimenting with his 2 to 1 reduction transmission.

Good luck, you seemed to get the other Excal 330 powered BFN running good a number of years ago, so I figure you'll get this running good too

You did good research! The older MO236K43 was only 212HP but this one was converted to the later MO236K42 Witch made 230HP

The Steyr Diesel must be using older technology.
The 2018 BMW 3.0L Diesel lists 255 HP at 4,000 RPM and 413 Foot of Torque at 1,600 RPM.
Mercedes, GM, Ford and Chrysler have versions with very similar power available in trucks today.
My Chevy 350 260 HP Marine engine had maybe 360 foot pounds of torque available at 3,300 RPM.
At 1,600 RPM the 350 might have 140 HP and 200 foot pounds.

The Diesel would out pull this engine every day but the 350 might have a higher top speed depending on prop used.

The small diesel with 400 ft pounds at 1,600 would feel like a Big Block but will never sound as good. Probably triple the mileage though.
I think we will see some of these new Diesel engines in boats in the near future.

With the newest Direct Injection Computer Controlled Turbo Diesel engines the horsepower and torque have really jumped in automotive and truck engines.
The BMW X5 Diesel is only a 3.0L, Horsepower is approaching 300 and torque is around 440, GM and Ford both have released smaller truck Diesels now with the same power.
You may have read about guys hot rodding the GM Duramax 6.6L, One put a Duramax in his 1970 Chevelle, it runs a 10 second quarter mile time, that used to take a Big Block with 600 Horsepower to run that fast.   Technology is changing the game as we used to know it.
I think we will see these Diesel Powerplants in Ski Boats in the future.
It will be interesting to see how Ben's Diesel Project works out.
The Diesel engines have so much more torque at low RPM I am thinking the 1:1 Tranny will work better spinning a larger prop. Most Diesels reach max torque below 2,000 RPM.

What does this Diesel Weigh?
I am curious how you work around the turbo set up for your exhaust?
A 3.2L Diesel making 240 HP will have a turbo or maybe a supercharger.

I had a 1984 6.2L GM diesel without a turbo that only made 140 HP and 240 foot pounds of torque.   Diesels have made huge progress in the last 30 years and the new ones will make great Boat Engines.

and yes 4300 rpm is good for diesel will try him first as a 230HP later on we have some tricks to add some pony,s

currently converting a 1984 Barefoot nautique with a STEYR MO236K43 6 cylinder turbo diesel this is a 3.2 L 230HP at 4300 rpm 400NM torque. what do you think about it?

For this project i,m looking for a prop 13x13Lh who has one ?
