It seems the gearbox does not like the diesel torque! After a few hours without problems the gearbox starts to slip at Maxium acceleration. Still can reach 67 km still can acceleratie good but not full throttle.

Couldn't find the ebay listing, they all said sold out. New they are pricey for sure. Gasoline won;t stay under $2 for much longer so there will be a long term payback. Also no EI distributor to worry about! Still have my jetjon, I know it is amateur mode but it makes for a fun ride on our river which is about 2 feet deep most of the way. I continue to refine it. The latest change is I added a homenade jackplate for a backup outboard. Several times jet pump sucked up flotsam & then it just cavitates. Makes a long ride back to ramp. Last fall I bought a 1972 Evinrude 18hp & have been restoring it. Got a good lesson on why people buy new outboards . . . |

I,m running this speed with only 4150 rpm so that is good we have 200 rpm left. So one or 2 extra mph must be possible with a bit extra boost |

I just checked the conversion to mph, 41.6. What were your WOT rpm? Curious if that's the right prop, whether there is a bit more speed available. Once you tune it I would think you can pick up 3-4 mph. Cool project, I like it! |

it is not cheap but when you do a lot of hours you will save some fuelcosts.

The setup works great! i have seen an other one in a m*stercraft
with large reduction gearbox and a big prop but that did not move so good. Always nice to do a little expriment! |

We did some test runs and it works fine! pulls good, it feels a bit stronger then a standard ford or gm v8. Just the first metre of the holeshot is not so strong but when the turbo kicks in it goes straight to topspeed of 67km. so i,m happy with the results so far, i have a video on my iphone how can i upload?

I figured if you hadn't seen it, it would be a good look at what he had for issues and give you an idea of what he did as far as prop experimenting with his 2 to 1 reduction transmission. Good luck, you seemed to get the other Excal 330 powered BFN running good a number of years ago, so I figure you'll get this running good too ![]() |

Yes i have seen this before but he uses a gearbox with large reduction. I think hope my solution works better at this type of boat. we will find out. |

You are right this is only a 3 litre engine and in the low rage it has less torque then the v8 petrol. that is why i think 1:1 setup with 13x13 will work good |

You did good research! The older MO236K43 was only 212HP but this one was converted to the later MO236K42 Witch made 230HP |

The Steyr Diesel must be using older technology.
The 2018 BMW 3.0L Diesel lists 255 HP at 4,000 RPM and 413 Foot of Torque at 1,600 RPM. Mercedes, GM, Ford and Chrysler have versions with very similar power available in trucks today. My Chevy 350 260 HP Marine engine had maybe 360 foot pounds of torque available at 3,300 RPM. At 1,600 RPM the 350 might have 140 HP and 200 foot pounds. The Diesel would out pull this engine every day but the 350 might have a higher top speed depending on prop used. The small diesel with 400 ft pounds at 1,600 would feel like a Big Block but will never sound as good. Probably triple the mileage though. I think we will see some of these new Diesel engines in boats in the near future. |

Ben interesting project you may have a look at this Correct craft diesel swap by Marine Diesel in Europe using Hammerhead unit they can go up to 500hp, we looked at them back in 09 on here the thing that came up is if the prop shaft/prop could cope with a 500hp high torque 1000 Nm @ 3000rpm
I know we have to work within a budget just keep an eye out for a used Hammerhead in Europe and Gale Banks engine if in the USA HammerHead Diesel in a SN Good luck with the build shall keep an eye on this one. |

If you look at the HP and torque curves for a Steyr MO236K42 (in the link below) which is a little more powerful than the K43 that Ben references, I don't see any kind of "torque monster" at all especially at low rpm's. Make sure you look at the graph on page 2 which is in good ol' American units of HP and torque ![]() A typical run of the mill 350 or 351 of about 250 ish HP has about the same power and more low end torque, weighs less and is less complicated. Now compare it to the 454 in a BFN and there's no really comparison I don't think I'd be going with a bigger prop with his 1 to 1 transmission at least to start the project. link |

With the newest Direct Injection Computer Controlled Turbo Diesel engines the horsepower and torque have really jumped in automotive and truck engines.
The BMW X5 Diesel is only a 3.0L, Horsepower is approaching 300 and torque is around 440, GM and Ford both have released smaller truck Diesels now with the same power. You may have read about guys hot rodding the GM Duramax 6.6L, One put a Duramax in his 1970 Chevelle, it runs a 10 second quarter mile time, that used to take a Big Block with 600 Horsepower to run that fast. Technology is changing the game as we used to know it. I think we will see these Diesel Powerplants in Ski Boats in the future. It will be interesting to see how Ben's Diesel Project works out. The Diesel engines have so much more torque at low RPM I am thinking the 1:1 Tranny will work better spinning a larger prop. Most Diesels reach max torque below 2,000 RPM. |

I think with the link below, you could probably answer most any questions you might have about Ben's engine or a bunch of other Steyr engines
![]() link It looks like Ben's numbers and Steyr's don't exactly agree on HP for a MO236K43 depending on where you look. |

What does this Diesel Weigh?
I am curious how you work around the turbo set up for your exhaust? A 3.2L Diesel making 240 HP will have a turbo or maybe a supercharger. I had a 1984 6.2L GM diesel without a turbo that only made 140 HP and 240 foot pounds of torque. Diesels have made huge progress in the last 30 years and the new ones will make great Boat Engines. |
