Typically nothing from the factory but, I'd use some blue (medium strength) thread locker on them. It will keep them in place and seal out moisture reducing corrosion. BTW, I've only seen the set screw loose when the coupling/shaft is fretted bad.

Question on the shaft coupler set screws: should they get anti-seize, or thread locker? I've seen conflicting views on the topic on various boating forums.

Yes, coupling is tight, and no, I didn't clean up before the photo was taken. So I guess I'm good as far as that goes, thanks.

Is the coupling still tight on the shaft? Unless you cleaned up the shaft at the bore of the coupling, I can't see any black smut that indicates fretting. I'd fix the strut, do the alignment and keep an eye on the coupling at the bore.

The key in my drive shaft coupler looks to me like it is made of key steel (not brass), and is showing some signs of corrosion. There is also some pitting of the edges of the aft end of the keyway.
The key is short (doesn't fill the length of the entire keyway) but is held in place with a set screw coming through the coupler from above (the hole for the screw is visible in the picture), so it should be secure. Question: is that key still in good enough shape despite the signs of corrosion? As best I can tell, it doesn't look to me like the shaft and key are fretting, but am I wrong on this, and are the particles that look like rust in the keyway actually a sign of fretting? Thanks for any help! |
