See if you can find a Doyle Quickstep, they came in 3 different models 1,2,and 3 step. There is a picture in the link here It's nice because it's not permanent. You don't need the clips, just tie it on to the lift ring

Don't forget, your 1.23 to 1 transmission has about a 1.9 to 1 reduction in reverse so more RPM's will be your friend in reverse. The older 88SN is 1 to 1 in forward and 1 to 1 in reverse too. Just one more thing to get used too ![]() |

Grab a used 2001 or NWZ rudder and give it a try. My 1995 NWZ Nautique does not back well at all but I have grown to accept that feature. If it is important to you liking the boat it is worth the time to try it. Keep in mind that with the very limited turning available when in reverse on these boats a light wind is enough to eliminate the ability to back up and turn into the wind.

I wish it would walk to port in reverse but no luck, it takes a good 30'+ and 1200- 1600rpms to get any type of turning/maneuverability in reverse. Forward at low speed has some control but not much.
I really thought I had lost my touch with docking until this weekend when I docked a friend's 2001 like a breeze. As of right now we go super slow straight in with a ghetto home made docking stick modification on the mandatory paddle. I would like to think a large rudder would give me some control at the dock but I've learned that a lot of the fads don't really add up to much ( ask me how many "specialty" hammers I own while only ever using a 22oz Estwing) |

Then again, how many people have said "gee I wish I hadn't swapped to the 11A".
It'll always be gnawing away at you just thinking about it ![]() |

Ethan, glad the float technique worked out, it really is easier than a ladder IMO.
When you say zero control, meaning it won't "walk" to port when you back up? Won't turn in forward when you jog it in gear? In reading a few of the discussions about rudders I'd say it's 50/50 between people that saw an improvement and people that felt there was little to no difference between stock and larger rudder. It seems to me larger would have to be better for low speed maneuvering, but not sure. If it was me I think I'd just live with it rather than mess with the port change. |

Keno- I've poured over all the discussions about swapping the rudder, and read a few (I'll admit it wasn't on this forum) about going to a after market option that wouldn't require the port being changed. Basically I can't make up my mind if it's worth it or not
. I still don't know if the current rudder I have on the boat is the original design or a upgraded rudder because the previous owners kids hit a log requiring all under water gear to be changed a month or two before I bought the boat. Honestly the boat handles great until your at the dock, I have almost ZERO control, I felt like I was a experienced docker before I got this 176. My last Correct Craft rudder came down and almost covered the prop looking at it on the trailer, this rudder still has 1/2 if not more of the prop exposed. Onto the topic of adding a ladder. Before this baby happended the woman actually refinished the teak for me while I was tackling other projects. When the idea of drilling holes into "her teak" came up it was quickly shot down. Guess after all these years she finally picked up on some of my quirks of being a finish carpenter--its about time ![]() |

Hold up now: it is not about the step.
This is a test. Order that step and drill the holes as soon as you can. Don’t forget this boat is a tool. You can patch the holes in a bolt-on wood swimstep faster than you can patch over any sore feelings of your wife. If you keep the boat forever, you will look at those scars as a beauty mark of YOUR wisdom. You might even be able to put the bolts between the wood pieces with surgical tube over the threads that would touch the slats. Would any of you settle for someone helping you into your own boat every time? If she never uses it, it still proves that you are solid, and ready to support her. -which is really what she was inquiring about... |

Bingo. She faces away from the stern. You stand on the swim platform and grab to top of her BA and pull her up so he is sitting. This technique has always worked well with less athletic visitors onboard. D |

Congratulations! The first one is very special. Our first was born June 24 and we were on a water ski camp trip the weekend of July 4th that year for 3 days with a 2 week old child. My mother almost disowned me but the baby did not care. Loved riding in the boat. Went to sleep as soon as we started the engine and started moving. Baby's adjust and go where you go. If you can talk Mama into it you are golden. You may wish to have Mama ride in the back, a hard wake crossing in a Nautique might deliver your baby long before you want it to arrive. In the back of the boat she will be fine even to 7 months or so.
Please tell her all this was your idea, not mine please. ![]() |

Thanks for all the help and kind words. Kind of caught me off guard to say the least.
On the upside looks like I won't have to share any rope time this season. Had a chance to get the boat in the water this past weekend and the float to platform technique looks to be the winner, but then again it could have been the 61° water that motivated her ![]() after a entire season of running with a portable air horn in the cup holder I decided it was time to address some electrical quirks. Horn relay and some new wiring made the original horn come to life. While I was a contortionist I decided to install a new radio , speakers and amp . Even found time for a wax job on the hull. I'm loving this 176 more and more everyday. Thinking about a 11a rudder upgrade, any thoughts? Ohh almost forgot to mention that all tests as of yet look perfect and this November a new little girl will be learning all about being a loyal Correct Craft fan |

Congratulations.
Now take it from me, save yourself all troubles and efforts and sell your boat now. Before you know it, if you want to go out on the boat skiing you’ll be by yourself unless your arms are long enough to drive yourself while skiing because boat life is over. |

Congrats, that is awesome news! Not sure you used the politically correct emoji in your first post though, might not want to let her see that.
![]() This may sound odd, but keep a cheapo tube in the boat, one of the $15 d*ck's Sporting Goods ones. I think she could use it to transfer onto the platform, beached whale method. Just a thought. |

My kids were born in August and September, so my wife spent a lot of time in and around the boat while pregnant. She was fine most of the summer but when she got a bit bigger she'd do that ^^ - hop up backwards, then spin around. She's fairly fit and slim to begin with, so that helps of course. Oh yeah, by the way Congratulations!! You might have to keep the boat in a little longer to get one ride in with the baby before it's too cold. |

Congratulations! She will be fine all Summer! Unless you’re still skiing after October I’m betting this won’t even be an issue. You could always add a temporary ladder to your platform (the PO of my SS unfortunately drilled holes for that which I eventually plugged). You’ll be making a lot more accommodations down the road than this—and CONGRATULATIONS! If it’s a girl please don’t name her Corona. Just sayin’.

Congrats! Quarantine baby boom is going to be a real thing
She may be able to get her butt onto the platform first, then swing her legs around and climb in. You can also help pick her up if you're standing on the platform first. |

If she isn’t overweight now she’ll likely not gain too much weight during the pregnancy. Shouldn’t be a problem until the last 3 months if even then. If she does need assistance just give her a hand. I wouldn’t think you’d need a ladder. Most water sports folks don’t need one.

After a full season of enjoying the new to me 176 life was rolling along great, preparation of the boat for this year was under way just as planned. Right up until this last weekend when the bomb of all bombs was dropped on me. The woman of my life informed me that we are expecting our first child
![]() As of right now we are looking at mid October. The woman is concerned about using the swim platform while being pregnant and hurting her stomach and the baby. Without throwing a ladder over the side or highly modifying the swim platform is there any other solutions anyone else has used in the past? My brain is more than overwhelmed at the moment |
