Clean up the wiring first. A second battery isn't going to do any good if the alternator isn't charging the original. How old is the battery and have you had it load tested?

I just took the whole alternator in, to ensure nothing was wrong with it. Given the age I suspected it maybe worn out. Wiring was my next step.
I've thought about adding a second battery in the boat as a back up. Any thoughts to that? |

Russ,
Did you check the voltages as recommended or just take the alternator in? I'd start cleaning up ALL wiring connections including battery cables and their terminals. |

Thanks, I took the alternator to a local alternator shop and it tested fine. I wonder if wiring, or old equipment (blower, etc.) are drawing too much amperage due to age? The radio is simple deck, small amp, and 4 - 6" speakers, no subs or anything major. I've heard this is a common problem for the older SN2001s.

Get the VOM (volt Ohm meter) out and get a voltage reading at the battery when the engine is running and then when it's not running. You should see around 14 running and with a battery charged around 12 not running. If you don't see the 14, then your alternator is suspect.

I have a 89 SN2001 that drains the battery while running. Can't run 2 things without draining the battery. Blower and lights, radio and lights, blower and radio, etc. no combination. Can only run one thing at a time to not drain the battery. Any thoughts how to correct this issue?
