So basically your saying points are unreliable and you come to this conclusion because you found someones opinion that matches your view on the internet using an example of a neglected Lucas distributor made by an English company known for questionable electrical equipment ? Can you then explain the continued use of points in general aviation? One would think reliability would be important in that field. I'm sure there are a few here that could show you failed electronic systems going by the trade name of Pro Tec

One thing I can tell you about EI conversion is, if the distributor cap cracks it can fry the module inside.

For sure you probably have other problems other than distributor
Clean carb? Plugs/wires. New gas |

Matthew,
Do you know how to set dwell on a point set? Lots of youtube's out there if not. |

Also check compression. If low, spending big $ on a new dizzy won't solve anything.

Maybe that first sentence should say "starting a turd when I can" since it starts like crap ![]() Why not spend a little on the tuneup parts and make sure it starts and runs good first, instead of just assuming an electronic ignition will cure all your issues? Then get the electronic after that |

3 words: Davis Unified Ignition.
You can dump the coil along with the points and condenser. JQ |

Hahaha love stirring a turd when I can. I bought an 85 nautique in Conn. for 1,000 bucks and trucked it back home to Northern Maine and the boat starts like crap. Installed new plugs new wires, cleaned points made sure all grounds and connections were clean metal and it still starts like crap, it’s getting fuel, I just would like to try something new and try the electronic ignition. But I’m sure if I buy new contacts and a new cap I’m sure it will last a very long time. Caught in the middle

The answer is do both I love my pertronix billet on the 318, And I had my original prestolite rebuilt, really glad to have it and know it is ready I’m saving my stimulus check for a spare module |

Oh boy, what a can of worms you have spilled open.
I run MSD distributors and electronic boxes on my Mustang 17 and all my hot rods. They shine the most on start ups, but are also great at high rpm. You will hear pro's and con's about both systems. There is no correct answer, just do what you want The control box can be hidden if you prefer, Not a big fan of the conversion units but I have used a Pertronix module with no ill effects. |

Keep it as original as YOU want it

Yea I was going to ask him if he's changing over to coil on plug because you know not many cars are sold with distributors anymore. Then I was thinking how about direct injection every ones going to that as well. But then I thought aw nuts I'm just going to drop 265K + and get a new Paragon it's even got linc and navigation on it- everyones going to that anyway

I wouldn’t necessarily go spend money to convert just for the sake of converting, no real gain. I see pros of points and I agree. But when was the last time we seen a failed EI module on this site? 🦗 🦗

If you do go with a EI conversion and you boat long distances, I'd keep a spare module on board just in case of a failure. The EI's have gotten reliable through the years but they still can fail. Are you expecting any gains?

Considering getting rid of the old points and condenser and buying electronic ignition kit. Does anybody have any advice on the matter?
