Ha ha, I like the concept of "real life". I'm guessing in real life you guys would not only get along, but compare notes on projects for hours on end. I find the knowledge both you guys have to be off the charts, really fun for me to listen and learn.

I get it. You've been around a couple of years longer than me but we've both been here a long time. For all of us frequent posters you figure out a bit about their personality, what they are about, etc. Great bunch of people here, if you can ignore that all of us have a dangerous addiction and time drain related to water and boats (and cars and tractors and on and on).

I'm equally hard to offend but when there's obvious bum dope thrown out there you really have to say something.

In this case I gave a perfectly accurate switch description using standard terminology but somebody then says otherwise. I actually let it slide then Duane told him the error in his ways and he then tells Duane he's as equally screwed up as me, Pete's jabs don't bother me at all, we've been going back and forth for years, but you have to point out the bum dope, otherwise the next guy looking for the right answer/solution is then mislead.

And then it deteriorates from there like it usually does with somebody named Pete whether it's me or a number of other people that he's disagreed with over the years. ( I'm keeping it polite here)

I'm not afraid to question him or point out an issue and that leads to disagreements,

If you wanna give crap, you should be able to take it too   

Every website has bum dope , this one maybe less than most, but if you want to keep it good, that bum dope needs to be pointed out.

Pete, While you were being so quick to condemn OUR terminology you again posted an error.   Explain to us why you would suggest a momentary contact switch that you would have to hold in the   (ON)   position when you wanted the light to be on. Seems kinda tiring to me, especially on long trips.
Switches that denote (ON) in parenthesis are MOMENTARY switches
Now that we all know which switch he needs, can we please put this to bed?.

A DPDT switch certainly does have a center off. You better go back to stacking 2X4's and surrender your EE Degree (if it exists). Sounds like back yard hackery to me

Pete's out boning himself up on switch terminology so in the meantime I figured I'd put a few things together to show you how to wire the switch like in the CC diagram

First picture shows the switch wiring. Purple is power into the 2 center terminals and the gray wires are to the bow light and stern light.

You can see that 5 terminals are used and one has nothing hooked to it.

Second picture, you can use your imagination a little. 2 trailer marker lamps were used.

Call the one with the cover your bow light and the one without the cover your stern light.

Switch is in the OFF position and neither light is lit.

Third picture, the switch is flipped one way and just the stern light is lit

Fourth picture, the switch is flipped the other way and both the bow and stern lights are lit (and in your boat, all the instrument lights would be lit too)

So like mentioned earlier, ask for a DPDT on off on switch, wire it like the pictures and the diagram and you'll have power where you want it.

I'm sure Pete will be along to expound on the differences in the switches and terminology   

BTW none of this little rig is up to Pete's lofty standards. I didn't use tinned marine wire or marine heat shrink tubing, just some cheap crimps and wire that was hanging around just to mention a couple of examples. But you get the point    or points.

Why don't you google a DPDT on-off-on switch   

You might learn a little something or maybe you'll tell us the whole switching industry is wrong ............in your opinion of course.

I suspect the center single terminal is common to both sides but, check continuity in all 3 switch positions and get back.

What ever you bought, you just can't go by the terminal layout pictured in the diagram as switch terminals can be different. I suggest using the VOM on the switch to identify what terminals go to what contacts then proceed with wiring.

You mentioned you replaced the switch, didn't know if it's correct but never mentioned what switch you have. What ever you bought, you just can't go by the terminal layout pictured in the diagram as switch terminals can be different. I suggest using the VOM on the switch to identify what terminals go to what contacts then proceed with wiring.

What switch do you have?

NO can do , it's a $$ issue now. Have to run with what I got. the main things are working fine Engine,Blower, Bilge Pump and Lights(just can't run just one)

If you rotate the picture below it'll tell you what you need to know about what kind of switch to get and how to wire it so you have bow, instrument and stern lights when flipped one way and just the stern light when flipped the other way

It's just a hand drawn little section of your diagram above   

It's tough to make out what your switch is in the picture and that little "bad" thing might be a diode which isn't necessary with the right switch wired per the diagram.
