My 88'SN is all Original and so is the 72 Mustang. It ain't gonna change. People ask me why have I not installed a stereo in the 72' I give them the look and inform them that the Best stereo money can buy is the sound outta the stern when you fire it up. |

John, You're fine so don't worry as there are many like me who understand the original concept. Regarding the Pro-Tec, as Todd says, they are great when they work. Just yesterday I got my neighbors Nautique on the hose and running. It's a carb'd Pro-Tec and so far runs great. Turned the water on, turned the key and she immediately fired up. |

The Pro Tec is a great system when it works. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Yeah it’ll likely fail at some point, just like any other ignition system, or transmission, or piston. The GT40 folks sure think that’s the greatest motor ever but with 25 years approaching on them we sure do see an a$$load of GT40 threads everyday.

Call me crazy (I'm sure most of you do already) but I get some satisfaction from knowing this boat is all original with the exception of the alternator and mufflers, and is in remarkably good condition for a 29 year old boat.
I understand why many of you would change to a different system. A change would likely make some of the features inoperable. I would lose limp mode for high water temp, the, knock sensor, low voltage and low oil pressure alarms, and the warning lights on the dash won't work. I haven't spoken to SKIDIM about it yet but I may try to stockpile a coil pack and ECU board in case of future problems. |

John:
It's hard to argue with a quick and cheap fix that keeps your engine running. As long as ProTec is working, it's not a bad system. However, I would caution you that there is a high likelihood that ProTec will fail at some point. The trouble with electronic wizardry is that failure is unpredictable and can be slow, intermittent or very sudden. And, as correctly stated above, parts for ProTec are no longer available (haven't been for several years). When the ProTec failed on my 1994 SNOB, I was pulling a skier at Lake Powell, AZ. After several failure "warning signs" the ProTec system completely died. I had to be towed back to the marina -- almost 20 miles away. I had the double-whammy as my 1994 had throttle-body electronic fuel injection, so I had to retro-fit back to distributor and carburetion JQ. |

I'm not trying to repair it, it's mission accomplished. Other than the pins wearing the ECU board from vibration it has worked flawlessly for 29 years and 561 hours. I'm up and running with a minimum of expense and labor. As far as SKIDIM I was concerned about them. Many small businesses are experiencing difficulties right now. I like to shop there because they are helpful and knowledgeable. I would hate to lose them. |

why on earth are you trying to fix a protec unit, they are not a good system to even attempt to repair , spend your time and money on either the retro fit kit or a DUI.distributor.
SKIDIM does sell to dealers as well, , Their is only 3 or 4 of them to fill orders, answer emails, phone, etc. usually 24-48 hrs on email .Probably been swamped with people using boats! Its a small warehouse I stopped by and picked up some risers a few years ago. |

I did my best wearing five year old glasses since I broke my current prescription and can't get new ones due to this virus. Not the neatest solder joints but it worked. Further problems and I'll be getting the Skidim swap out ignition kit to replace this Pro-Tec system.
Thanks for the help. Back to the Mustang. |

Thanks to everyone. Soldering has begun
So many businesses are struggling. Happy to hear SKIDIM is ok. They have been very good to me. I will swap the Pro-Tec to one of their replacements if I encounter problems. |

I’m 100% certain any protec specific parts are NLA. Continue on with your home fix.

The Pro-Tec circuit board with several processors and an alarm for low oil pressure, high water temp, and low voltage has a 10 pin connector. The holes in the circuit board have been enlarged slightly from viabration and now fit losely causing intermittent loss of contact. I would like to buy a new one of possible. If not I will be forced to solder the pins to the board on the back after plugging it in. I prefer not to solder it. Do you know if the board is still available? It is not severe enough to affect operation yet, but the alarm is intermittant when the key is on with the engine off. |

You could ask the question here...
Suspect SkiDIM is flat out. Have ordered parts in the last month so they’re not closed. |

Has anyone been able to contact SKIDIM recently? I have been trying for several days I have sent an email and left a detailed TX message but no reply. I have always had great customer service. There is no message about being closed for the virus. I realize this is peak season and they may just be super busy. I need some info on a Pro-Tec system and don't know where else to turn.
