OK. sounds good. I did order 2 feet of 3/16" waxed rope from Nautique Parts. They told me NOT to order the GFO, as they said it was a waste using that on a rudder shaft, but they DO recommend GFO for the high rpm application in the drive shaft stuffing box.

Dan,
If 3/16 packing is used where 1/4 should be used, then getting 5 wraps in the gland is possible. |

GHTHILL...yes I know we have the same boat.. I remember you asking me some questions a couple years ago or so. Anyway, my boat has NEVER been left outside,
I've never had my bilge flooded, and I DO NOT trust anyone (other than myself) and a couple select people working on my boat. My cable, and rudder packing are worn out from 2300 hours of skiing, and never being changed. Not bilge flooding. Gary..I don't need to worry about the seal on my boat, as I am not having water leaking into the cable issues. So..my question.......has ANYONE else who has replaced their rudder packing seen 5 wraps??? I've heard 2 or maybe 3. But never 5. |

My boat was left outside for a month while being serviced, with the drain plug in, and possible the cover off. That is why my bilge was filled . Never again. my baby will only get serviced here in my garage. Thanks for the link. The part is backorded though.

Might want to check the seal on the support tube if your having water in cable issues. Here is a link with a part number. Every time I have replaced a cable I've changed that seal just to be on the safe side. Cables not being cheap but the seal at around 20 may just help save it. seal link

You know we have the same boat. Color and all. I replaced my steering cable 2 years ago and it was perfect! Replacing again this weekend due to the bilge being flooded last spring. (long story). Make sure you tie a long rope on the rudder end before you snake the old cable out.

OK....got "just a little" work done on the old 93 SN today.
1. New skins going on the observer seat: 2. Got the steering cable disconnected and rudder dropped: 3. SWEET BABY JESUS..... 5 wraps of packing in the jam nut?? Can this be?? Well, my assumption WAS right...the internal packing was pretty much dry rotted away and nasty...as you can see: |

Keno....yep timelines ALWAYS change. I am hoping to get more use out of the old rudder as well.
As for the steering cable. Yep, and the bolt up measurement was 2 1/8" x 1 3/8" and so I did not go with the OEM ($395 cable), I went with the Teleflex replacement found online at many different places. I got it for $162.00. |

I remember the rudder and remember what you said last year
Seems like one of those always changing timelines As long as you're keeping an eye on it, you'll probably be using it for a lot more years |

Looks like the Teleflex number right there in the picture SSC12420. upside down and backwards For the old style rack. Since the word "obsolete" always comes up when talking about the old style rack, I think going JQ's route with the new rack and it's cable assembly would be the most logical move. |

Ok...climbed under my steering wheel/dash today and got a quick look to confirm what I would need to do this replacement. I did disconnect the cable from the rudder and the cable feels almost like it has "molasses in winter" in it, when I turn the wheel. Also, my rudder has some pretty good slop in it, so I ordered some Flax to re-pack the rudder box while I am at it. Should be good as new once I am all done. Oh and for those guys that remember I was having cavitation eating away at a couple spots at the end of last season on my rudder, I did fill those spots with some Marine JB Weld as well. Gonna run it this summer and see if it happens more, and then possibly replace the rudder early Fall.
Here are a few shots up under my dash: |

A quick way to confirm cable is to disconnect it from the rudder and turn the wheel. Of course, if it's a helm issue, that won't help. I upgraded my helm and cable from SKIDIM. Just about perfect. :)

Here's a cut and paste from another thread today with Pete's answer to you about somebody else's cable. Click on his link and you'll have info on what you need for a cable, not necessarily a part number but info anyways. You can get a new helm and new cable at SkiDim for the later boats to replace your 93 stuff if you're so inclined. Here's a link and a link below Shopping around just might save you some money too link link

Dan,
I'd say 1/8 both ways is pretty normal. There's always some play in the system. I'd wait on the cable and see how it works in the water Any stiffness over what you remember from last year would be the concern. |

Hey Guys. Well, I am being busy bee installing some of my new C & S Marine skins in my 93, changing oil, filters, tranny fluid, etc.
Anyway, I decided my steering was a little "stiff" last summer, and so I'd look into it this spring, and fix anything that needs fixing. Anyway, down under the boat, the rudder has a little "play" from side to side and front to back. I'd say maybe 1/8" either way. So....I'd imagine I am due for new Packing. THoughts? Also, I seriously doubt the steering cable has ever been replaced in the boat...and I'd like to replace. I got this Part number ( S220520) BUT can't seem to find the part number at Nautique Parts, or any other place using that number. Any help in the cable would be great. Thanks much |
